Just curious where would you go

Out of your list I'd say Netherlands or Hungary.

With so many insane world events going on It's better to play it safe and not try to move somehwere that you're not sure of.

We thought of checking out SE Asia but the humid weather, bugs funky lizards and snakes are a put off.

Plus we've never been to the part of the world and are getting too old for a big surprize.

If we really left Hungary we more then likely would go back to the US.

Even that is a mystery to me, can chose any state really but none really are calling out to me.

Lived in 10 US staters in the past, good things and not so good in all of them.

Calif. is great, or rather used to be great. So expensive there now that it's not even on my list.

I am not sure, think real estate is slow now in Hungary and it's still a buyers market.

I have an American friend in her mid 60's who just moved to Portugal. Too soon for her to say if she likes it there long term or not.

She is giving it a year for now.

Sleep on it, when you go to sleep but the thought in your mind and see what comes to mind when you wake up.

    We like it in Turkey, but residence permit can be a pain and can be devasting (one does not loses its property, but the right to stay). Already think were to goMe and my wife are Dutch, so not too many issues. What about Cyprus? 

You don't need a residence permit for the Southern part as it's EU.  I went backwards and forwards to the North and back to the South on foot and by car through the border crossing. Curious arrangements.

I couldn't recommend Malta.  I was there recently.  I had been there before years ago.  This time around I didn't like it much.  Thought the people rude and it was all just too small in scale.

I thought Batumi was awful. Liked Tbilisi, but for a few weeks maybe not a few years.

For Bulgaria I'd prefer inland places like Veliko Tarnovo or Plovdiv.

And if you'd consider staying in Turkey, consider Eskişehir. Big surprise how nice it is.

Bear in mind that if you'd asked this question a couple years ago I might have suggested Odessa or Lviv.

(By the way, I was under the impression that while processing the permit can be time consuming, Turkey is a relatively easy place to retire to in terms of bureaucratic requirements. No?)

Varna not exactly safe.

Others can be working, jet don't be surprised if find Holland very different than was even just years ago.

I'd consider Northern Spain, the Cantabrian Coast, or Portugal (cheaper). Away from big cities, rents are reasonable (compared to Budapest!). Beautiful scenery, wonderful cuisine, good/great infrastructure.

Never been to Georgia, but researched it extensively, also, received accounts from friends who have visited. My conslusion was that it's a great destination for a short trip in particular due to its natural beauty, and for a short trip it offers great value, but not for a long stay. Gathered an even worse impression of Batumi specifically... And this was before the Ukraine war and hordes of russians driving prices up.

I'd check out Thailand if I were you, from what I can vaguely remember your argument against it was safety concerns?

Indeed prices in Batumi have sky rocketed (one of the reasons I am sad I did not buy two years ago).

Such is life, in Turkey (Alanya) residence permit has become a challenge, lets see how it goes and me and my wife are relatively comfortable (for Russians it is VERY VERY difficult to say the least).
