Post new topic

Good morning all, travelling to DR in early 2024, would like to rent a motorcycle to explore. Have heard it is dangerous and crazy to do it. I am an experienced rider. Opinions anyone? also need name of a reputable motorcycle rental place. TUIA.

Please be sure you wear a helmet! Most places do not include helmets with rentals, so be sure to ask about availability before reserving a bike!

Where in the country do you plan to rent? That will help people make recommendations. There are also many different kinds of motos to rent. We usually see smaller bikes for rent around town, but if you are planning to explore the country by bike,  you’ll want a more substantial one.

The rules of the road aren't followed or enforced here, so you have to always assume the cars, motos, and pedestrians you share the road with will do something stupid!

My opinion is: the risk of death or injury will be increased if you use a Motorcycle in the DR as compared to the United States. Opinions are not facts, now I will share the following facts: I attended the funeral of a stranger who died 23 days ago as he was riding his motorcycle on a clear sunny day and misjudged an intersection and hit a Pick Up Truck and he landed directly in front of me. He was gone in a second. The trauma for the people seeing his lifeless body until the EMT pronounced him and covered him was hard to watch on the faces of passers by. IN the DR 1498 people died between 2016 & 2020 on a bike. There is a 6 times greater chance of dying on a bike that a car. Please go enjoy your vacation and reconsider the use of a bike.

I ride both my sport bike 1000CC in DR and my little 200 CC for city driving. You said you were experienced but I would honestly not go over anything that 300-450 CC  and as a precondition (2)  do not drive at night just don't..here it gets you in trouble so fast. You need to worry about a lot of things that you do not have to deal with in North America. Lighting - vehicle lights don't function on many vehicles as they don't care and police do not enforce this; so many people have died from not seeing another vehicle - just don't go out at night seriously. The bike they give you - If it's a Dominican you're renting it from just prepare for it to die on you, tires, electrical, no oil changes are just half the battle. You do not want a big bike here the roads are bad, you can use maybe 15% of the public/private roads if you have a sport-bike, they're just not good bikes here other than showing off. Drivers do not know how to drive and will cut you off without second thought do double labe change, not respect lights etc is just some more. if you have never driven a car in DR I highly reccomend you do not just get on a bike I promise you it's not the same coming from someone who has been riding since they were 7..

Riding a motorcycle in RD cities is crazy dangerous. Yes I ride but I would never ride in an urban area in that country unless it's Saturday morning early and return early another morning. Once you drive in the city there you'll know. Do that first.

If you're in Los Terranas (small city easy to escape), there's a dealer there who'll rent you a KTM dual sport (like 250cc) that are in good condition. After that, good luck finding anything other than a Chinese knockoff motorcycle.
