Hello,
Hi, I plan to use KL as a base for 4 months of travel in SE asia and am looking for input on how to find a rental property.
Thank you
@Julien
Greetings everyone, this is Paul. My wife and i are retired and love Asia. We are traveling for 3 months in Asia as of Jan ’25. We will spend time in Vietnam and Malaysia in hopes of finding the best location for us to spend a year or so.
We have found this website to be an excellent source of information and help.
Best to all
@Julien
Hi Julien, thank you for this.
Hi everyone,
My name is Narelle. I am an expat and I have lived here ever since 2009. Prior to this, I have lived and worked in Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore.
We have put 4 children through school here.
We have lived in two different neighbourhoods in northwest KL and we now live in our forever house also in northwest KL.
While we are expats, we live like the locals and we love it here.
We are not sure what the current employment landscape is like but we are happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to drop us a line and we shall answer as soon as we see it.
Cheers.
Hi
We are a couple from the UK, starting to look at retiring to Malaysia. We may actually move before then as my wife is looking for a position in an international school.
We have been to Malaysia a few times and it's seems to be the place for us. Still deciding between KL, Penang, Johor and maybe Ipoh.

Aight den. Here I am. And brace yourself: I tend to get quite wordy.
Anyhow, I've pretty much always wanted to live somewhere in Asia. When I was younger I was really focused on Japan because I had been stationed there as a young Marine. I learned enough of the language to converse with adults, but kids expected my fluency to be much better than it was. Alas, I have lost most of that proficiency due to disuse over the past ~40 years.
So when I retired I finally came to the decision that Asia is the place for me. Of course I checked into Japan as best i could. But it seems that the only people I can get any information from--mostly on YouTube--are young "influencers" who generally say absolutely nothing about cost(s) of living and how accepting the Japanese people are or are not. So I ruled it out because I think it's one of the more expensive places to live in Asia and I would be just too isolated. Besides, I ain't got no testosterone left in my body for the ladies and I quit drinking ~30 years ago.
South Korea? Pretty much the same but with a strange (to me) long-term rental practice where the renter gives the landlord $many thousands and then doesn't pay rent while the landlord lives off of the proceeds of the renter's money and then returns the renter's money at the termination of the lease. A bit too complicated for me.
I though about Taiwan. For a very short time. I mean, between the earthquakes and China it just doesn't seem like a place that I'd feel very secure in.
Also Japan and Korea appear to have the most disc golf courses of anywhere in Asia. Disc golf is the only thing I've found that will get me off of my fat butt to get any exercise at all. So it's very important for me to be close to disc golf courses. Quite a bit of disc golf in Taiwan, but not enough to sway me.
It's no secret that the biggest American Expat communities are in Thailand and The Philippines. I did spend some time in The Philippines in 2008 and ended up getting married and then divorced. While there I learned that while quite affordable, the roads were in pretty bad condition in the rural areas and I also spent an inordinate amount of time without electricity and wifi. Since I spend a lot of time watching YouTube and such on the TV, that makes it a deal breaker for me although I was really happy to find that just about everybody speaks English there. And it doesn't hurt that the ladies are quite attractive as is the case throughout Asia. Alas, only one disc golf course in the entirety of The Philippines.
Thailand? No so great for English, but the prices are right. "Some" disc golf, but not much. The other countries in that section of Asia are probably even worse than Thailand as far as English and disc golf although everywhere seems affordable.
There doesn't seem to be much--if any--disc golf in Indonesia. And, again, it seems that the only information coming out of there is from young influencers.
Singapore was definitely out of the question due to cost of living. Didn't even have to think about it.
Then I found that there were 4 (maybe more) disc golf courses in the KL area. So I started my research. I found Taylor on YouTube who seems to be the only vlogger capable of putting out information useful to someone such as myself. So I thought that I had settled on KL. I somehow had it in my mind that JB would be too expensive due to its proximity to Singapore.
But I was wrong! It appears to be just as affordable as KL and has at least 10 disc golf courses. How could I possibly get bored in such a place?
So I joined the Johor Bahru Expat Community (JBEC) on Facebook and began chatting with the folks there. Got lots of good info from them and a couple of agents to help find a place for me to live. And possibly a housekeeper. But I also plan to ask plenty of questions here and I hope that I don't work anybody's nerves due to my ignorance.
Looking forward to learning lots from you people.
@Julien

Hi there,
I'm moving to KL from Scotland next week so it's a stressful but exciting time for me.
As a noob I don't want to post a novel length introduction so I'll keep it short & sweet. I'm a retired English teacher and after spending the past year or so visiting my son who lives in KL I decided to move there. The hardest thing for me was having to rehome my two beloved spaniels. I would love to have brought them with me but they would've been miserable in the heat. I hope to volunteer at a dog shelter in KL if I can. Of course I'm also going to miss my grandkids here in Scotland so it's a bitter-sweet experience for me.
If anyone would like to befriend a dog-loving, Scottish grandma hit me up!
@Ziggy With It
Aye, indeed! lol
For the past 12 years I've been working as an online ESL teacher with 30 Chinese students most of whom now speak English with a Scottish accent
@Julien
I am planning to relocate into Malaysia, with 13 years of industry experience in Oracle and SAP. Wish to keep in touch connect with qualified recruiters whom can help me connect with potential employers open vacancies for expats. Thanks in advance

Hi! My name is Fahd. I've just moved to KL with my family. Lots to contribute and lots to ask 😄
I finally made it to Malaysia! Currently in KL for a week followed by a couple of weeks in JB. Why? Well, I've decided to let disc golf tournaments decide for me where I'm going to be after meeting a few disc golfers in The Philippines.
So far, I've spent a week in Japan (Shinagawa/Tokyo followed by Shin Osaka) and a month in Tagaytay, Philippines. Now KL, Soon JB. Then off to Koh Samui, Thailand for another tournament followed by Chiang Mai. Palawan, Philippines is the last tournament that I have scheduled after that. Then I'll start looking for more places to go.
Well, I mean, I'll start planning before then especially since I have to have an exit ticket out of The Philippines before heading there.
My first impressions of Malaysia are quite good. My Grab driver from the airport was cool. But when we got to the hotel I was surprised to be asked for a $100 deposit and MYR10 per day tax. I thought all of that would have been taken care of by Agoda when I paid for the room. And while I was still working that out with the clerk the coffee shop guy began aggressively trying to get me to buy his product. What a turn off!
But I've been walking the area a lot more than I thought I would have. Good for my fitness! Every meal so far has been pretty darned awesome. Got a mani-pedi and massage yesterday. All of it was excellent. I got ~6 massages while in The Philippines and the biggest difference between those and the ONE Malaysian massage is that the masseuse didn't try to physically hurt me. Hence I felt much more relaxed after my massage instead of beat up.
I'll definitely be eating, walking, and getting massages for the remainder of my time in KL. Throw in disc golf in JB, rinse and repeat!
