Hello everyone,

My wife and I have an apartment in Las Terrenas approximately 10 months from completion.

We're looking for recommendations for local interior designers and advice from homeowners who are or have been in our shoes.

Of course the developer ordered a generic "Italian kitchen" which is essentially a place holder - a line of cabinets with a cheap sink and faucet, insufficient storage, lower cupboards instead of drawers and uppers which are too short and leave a large gap to the ceiling. We're looking to exchange the uninstalled kitchen for credit against changes to the construction negotiated by our lawyer and real estate broker's office.

Has anyone had experience commissioning a local company to fabricate cement counters and frame to build out with local wood?

We're also interested in commissioning local furniture makers to make beds and chairs. There doesn't appear to be a Dominican marketplace for good vintage furniture (1950s-1990s) so we'll explore findings (from Craigslist, eBay, Facebook Marketplace and estate sales) and gradually bringing in pieces from the US, or possibly try and fill half a container. Does anyone have experience importing furniture - sofas, tables etc... and how does the expense and experience compare with the prices and offerings in Santo Domingo.

Any recommendations of furniture stores in Santo Domingo or local carpenters and cabinet makers in Las Terrenas/Samana would be much appreciated.

I'm hoping to create a good list of resources for ourselves and other expats - although many already have great lists or even websites already. Might be a good YouTube channel - I'm a photographer and film maker specializing in interiors.

Thanks,

Max

Mimbres Rattan on the Cabarete side of Sosua.   Super quality furniture and they create built ins.  The company was founded by a German cabinetmaker and designer, very well trained in Germany.   It's run today by his widow and most efficiently.    They will make chairs etc. or work with you on custom designs.   Not cheap, but then you are paying for good wood materials and rattan and quality.

@maxdoxie If you are talking about bringing in a container with residency, it is definitely worth it! If not with residency and the exoneration of import duty on personal/household items, it will be quite expensive!

Hi crz300 and ddmcghee,

Thank you for your replies and information contained therein.

I'll check out Mimbres Rattan - they sound great.

If we do decide/cost out a partial container from Miami to the DR we'd use an intermediary with Dominican residency asuming our own is delayed until the final payment on the property we've "bought" goes through early next year - when we'd want to be moving furniture in.

I've found a few useful comments in older post along simialr lines to my own - alas as yet no website where someone has consolidated all the information - might be tempted...

@maxdoxie Just to be clear, the exoneration of import duty is a one-time deal and must be done in the first 6 months of your residency. If the timing works with the other person’s residency and they want to go through the process with Aduanas on your behalf, that's great, but they would be foregoing their own container, or if you combine in one container, you risk it not being approved for exoneration if there are duplicate items that tip them off that its two households.

I want to add to the comment from DDMcghee.  Why does it matter if there are 2 of the same appliance (for example).  If you have a big house, you might want one fridge in the garage, one in the kitchen, another in a room in the other end of the house, maybe even on the covered patio outside,   Although they might question it, maybe its not a good idea and they should do as recommended.
