An Independent Mindanao?

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – While opposing the people’s initiative for charter change which he believes is orchestrated by the Marcos administration, former President Rodrigo Duterte says he is pushing the idea to secede Mindanao.

He bared this at a press conference Tuesday night at Gand Men Seng Hotel, where his supporters held a Hakbang ng Maisug Leaders Forum last Sunday.

This may be more than just bluster; DU30 is immensely popular there. I do wonder what the implications might be for foreigners, especially Americans, living in the region.

What would be interesting (but not necessarily in a good way) is what a separate Mindanao would mean for the dynamics currently playing out with China and their claims in the South China Sea.  Would a separate Mindanao mean a weaker Philippines?

Think about that. Secede? The Philippines is already a poor country with a low GDP. How exactly would Mindanao secede? They'd have to create a military for defense. Government with laws (dictatorship?). Money! They have to create their own money. Based on what? It's a far more daunting task than meets the eye. And with no great export value, where will they get money to fund a transition? Gonna take it from already poor people?

Heard Duterte has a drug problem.  Probably an independent Mindanao is the only way he gets back into politics, although he claims he is retired.  In a similar situation, some speak of Texas becoming the republic it once was.

As far as Mindanao seceding from the Philippines,  I doubt that will happen,  because of the Muslim majority eastern half of the island.  They would suddenly have a much larger voice in the politics of the island if it became its own country.    People (and I mean the political elite there) would be too afraid of losing control.

Hello everyone,

Please note that several posts have been put aside from this thread as they were off-topic. I would invite members not to discuss politics on the forum.

Thank you

@Bhavna, sorry I was writing that reply. Then went to delete it when I saw your note above.

@danfinn Duterte is huff and puff and is now suffering from LDS - Limelight Deficiency Syndrome. He hates Marcos and wants to stir up trouble.

DU30 did a great job in putting down the insurrectionists in Marawi, most of whom were ordinary farmers with no military experience and unqualified to go against the army. Any success they did have was by using cowardly terrorist tactics like suicide bombings. Levant has nothing to do with Mindanao as it describes only a section of the mideast. ISIS as a whole was defeated by Trump in a matter of a few weeks after the US killed their leader. So DU30 plus, indirectly, the US, spared Mindanao and ultimately the entire country from Islamic fascism. You can say what you want about DU30 but he, like Trump, were strong leaders in office when string leadership was required.

All Rodrigo Duterte has to do is make it long enough for Sara to become President, or maybe he will run as vice President

How often is string leadership required?
