D7 visa with non-passive income

Hi all,

I'm hoping to get residency in Portugal and currently exploring my options. I work remotely as a freelancer, but my income can be a little irregular and doesn't quite always meet the 4 x minimum salary of 820 euros a month. Therefore I don't think I will meet the income requirements to go for the D8 digital nomad visa.

The D7 seems a better fit for me. From what I have read, everything mentions that your source of foreign income should be passive. However, I have heard anecdotally that this can still be an option for freelancers who are earning their income from a foreign source (I am a sole trader registered in the UK).

I will be able to show a balance of available funds of at least 12 x 880 Euros. Is this sufficient on its own? Or do you also need a regular income. If so, can this be through active work?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Russell

Hi Russell,

I don't know the answer for this. Before the D8 digital nomad visa, the D7 visa was used and accepted. Now I don't know if the D7 is still accepted for digital nomads/freelancers , or just the D8. Try contacting the PT Embassy.

If anyone has up-to-date information, I'd be grateful for your help.

No, you cannot use D7 unless it's truly passive income. It's not. Your income over the preceding 3+ months prior to your D8 appointment should average to at least 4x820. I'd suggest you get professional help.
