We are considering a move to Poland

Hi, my name is Richard.  I currently live in Richmond, TX USA but we are considering a move to Poland in the next year or two.  I am a US Veteran with my extended family being Polish, thus my wife and kids are fluent in the language.  We also attend church at a Polish Catholic church in Houston.

I have so many questions that I don't even know where to start.  This isn't like moving to another town or state.  We have a house, cars, belongings, a life, here in Texas.  What to take, what not to take.  Jobs, etc.  I've heard from some friends in Poland that because I'm a native English speaker I could teach conversational English as a side-gig.  Any insight on that?

My current job would probably let me continue working remotely and live in Poland so employment is not an immediate concern, but could be in the future.  I work as a technology manager for SaaS and database-type things.

Looking forward to being able to pick the brains of others like me already there.

Thanks

Rich.

HI!

I travel to Poland regularly since I have family there.  My wife and children usually spend the summer their with my mother-in-law.

My first trip to Poland was in 2000.  It has changed A LOT since then...  I will check out the guide.

Do you have teaching qualifications? Like TESOL/TEFL?

Despite sounding similar, the two acronyms describe two different teaching contexts. TESOL refers to teaching English to individuals and groups who speak another language. This can be either in the U.S. or abroad. TEFL refers to teaching English in places where English is a foreign language.

I have neither.  But, I've been told by several individuals that I would be able to teach privately, or in a school, the concept being simply having conversations.  Obviously, there would need to be structure, etc.

I would prefer to do something like this as a side-gig tho.  Not as my main bread and butter, at least not until I retire.

I would suggest that you move to Poland for 6-8 months to see how you adjust before moving for good.

If you could keep your current position for a while then that would be perfect and then you could consider becoming an English Language Teacher if you get a proper training and certification to do so or just apply for a local position as a Technology manager since there are so many international /American multinationals in Poland .

@cptcrusty1   Hi Richard,  We are moving to Poland this summer!  (Lisa & Andy).  We are in Everton, AR now. My husband is a Polish citizen returning, after 18 years here....and I am so excited. Yes, very big move. We decided to sell off everything that won't fit into a 40ft oceanfreight container. Having auctions to destash and the house should be listed mid June after the 2nd auction.  Lots of reasons for our move...we are retired, and both of us are artists, so that makes it a little easier...we have been together 18yrs and I never learned Polish...(only the bad words), so that will be a challenge for me.  Anyhow, I will message you our contact email and numbers if you have any questions about what we have done to prepare.  We are going to the Polish Consulate in Houston after the 1st auction to renew Andy's passport and to register our marriage. They have been extremely helpful. they also said I can apply there for a 1 year visa instead of traveling over as a tourist.  Ok, I'm writing a book...will send our info.  Lisa
