After half a century of General Motors operating
its assembly plant in metro Quito, GM has just
announced it will close the plant in August (2024).
GM's Chevy Sail has been a popular model on
Quito streets for many years. GM says it will
continue to support Chevrolet, although how it
will do so is unclear.
GM simultaneously announced that it is closing
its Colombia plant, dismantling to begin immediately.
On his Sunday YouTube program, Coffee Time,
the host -- longtime automotive enthusiast
Loren Lowe (rhymes with cow) -- speculated that
the GM closings probably have a lot to do with the
fact that the industry will be switching to electric vehicles,
which may not be popular with motorists
in the Andes mountains.
