I was confused about #11. I thought the "national identity number" might mean the NIF!! It didnt!

NIF = Número de Identificação Fiscal = PT tax number

NIF is NOT a National identity number (not even for portuguese citizens)

#31 refers to situations where there is an invitation letter, otherwise it's N/A

@JohnnyPT Yes, I realized the NIF wasn't a national number. The US doesn't have national numbers. Another "N/A" response. I found that sometimes the language or the question itself or the sequence of questions in the application form could be confusing.

And when I goggled for the question, it says it's the NIF. The SSN number is called NISS, also known as "Número De Segurança Social". They want the NIF number. That's the only one a non citizen can get. It will be your tax identification number for tax purpose. I'm putting the NIF number and not applicable.

Are you a US citizen? I asked my attorney about #11, whether they were asking for the NIF. She responded "The answer is N/A. The US does not have national identity numbers."

@Wordsmith55572 The precise wording of Question #11 is "National identity number, where applicable." You must also supply.a copy of your NIF issuance paperwork and many other documents with information that is not asked for on the basic application. The VFS checklist for Miami did not include some documents that were required.

Also see JohnnyPT's response. The NIF is not a national number. So the answer to #11 cannot be the NIF because the NIF is not a national number, as he points out, not even for the Portuguese!

In field #11 you don't put the NIF.

NIF is one of the mandatory requirements, as well as the Portuguese bank account, for example. But this data is not included in the application form. They will be presented as additional documents, like all the others required.

@dvaughanjones You have to read the questions very carefully. Some can be very confusing. I don't know where you are applying from, but the VFS document list on the Miami FL VFS site was also incomplete.  Other instructions were confusing, such as telling you to download and print out two copies of the bar-coded separator sheets from the site. The VFS official who collected my paperwork said he thought those sheets were "only for applications for The Netherlands"!
