@peterg123  I believe the government is now encouraging agriculture with lots of incentives. Hydroponics is increasing. However, I do not know how many people/businesses are interested in developing this further.

Mauritian friends tell me working in agriculture is considered  not good: if Indo-Mauritian it is a reminder of indenture, is Creole a reminder of slavery. It is a looked down upon profession.

I expected a massive greenhouse culture in Mauritius, not at mom  and pop level but AgroBiz level like Kenya has, Alas not at all. Agriculture is restricted to small farmers on inadequate plots and the rest of the land hoarded by sugar cane. Hope it will change.

@peterg123  true. Time to invest in agri-business on a big scale with govt incentives. Hydroponics perhaps. Vertical farms, organic, sustainable, etc.

vertical farms

By the way, I am interested, I also know about things, Led grow lights, spectrum and plant growth experiments...I have a lot of experience...I am planning to come to Mauritius in September.

and I don't do anything alone,

but can I find cooperation?

@Kaupo Klaas   keep asking!

I thought that I would start in September, when I am there, but now the topic of the vertical farm came up...

couldn't miss writing :)

I would like to start in Mauritius, if possible and the circumstances are suitable, maybe I can find the right cooperation partners/people/or community.

I have actually kept this plan for about 4 years? just now I'll try to start it for real.

Seriously and really interested parties can contact me before ...

@Kaupo Klaas.  Do consult the EDB.

Mainly for those who might be interested. I thought I should start a separate thread about it, considering a discussion is happening on a very different thread.

@Kaupo Klaas, please make sure that you also have a great business plan.  Locals tend to buy and eat in season because the prices are low.  If you plan to invest in high value crops, please make sure that you have demand and distribution channels.  If you plan on developing economies of scale on existing crops, please make sure that you will be allowed to compete with existing suppliers.

Also forget exporting as the added shipping cost will probably not make the venture competitive.

One more thing, please make sure that you have access to sufficient water and fertilizer....

Good luck in attempting this very valuable enterprise.

@Kaupo Klaas.  I have started a new topic on agriculture incentives on this forum, since this a completely different topic. Please do have a look at it.

Hello everyone,

Please note that this new thread has been created on the Mauritius forum for better interaction. The thread where they were initially posted was not quite fitting.
