Travel Plans - Advice Needed

GuestPoster1987

I have an upcoming trip to the Philippines and would like to get some opinions on whether you believe my itinerary would cause any issues. I didn't think so initially, but now I'm beginning to second-guess myself.

I'm an American living in Singapore. I'll be flying from Singapore to Manila on Aug 1 (one-way ticket) on AirAsia. That will get me a 30-day stamp good until Aug 31. I have a one-way throw-away flight on Air Asia for Aug 26 from Manila to Hong Kong (proof of onward travel), and I also have a one-way flight on Air Asia on Oct 16 from Manila to Singapore (which will be my actual return flight home).

If not obvious already, I will be extending my stay via the 29-day extension. So I know I am good to go with the above tickets. One flight into the PHL. One throw-away flight to pretend I am leaving within 30 days. A visa extension. And one flight out of the PHL within the allowed extension limit.

My main plan while in the Philippines is where I am beginning to question if the above logic will be used or if they will give me a hard time... please follow along:

After arriving in Manila on Aug 1, I will return to NAIA the following day. I have a round-trip flight with Cebu Pacific from Manila to Davao City on Aug 2 and returning Davao City to Manila on Sep 24.

I am not a mind reader, but I feel like there are two main ways this will go, and I am curious as to your feelings or opinions. They will also ask for proof of onward travel, which I can show them the AirAsia Manila to Hong Kong and they'll be fine with it is it's before the 30-day period. Or on the flip side, they will question either the length of the round trip flight is beyond the 30 day period, or they will question if flying the first half of this round-trip ticket to Davao City, how am I getting back to Manila to fly to Hong Kong (and want to see proof of that, too - or possibly, question if my plan is to not use the second half of the round trip flight (which I am going to use).

Overthinking? Yes, slightly. But I don't want to be standing at the PAL check-in counter at 4am on Aug 2 arguing with a PAL employee about immigration and tourist visa extensions, throw-away tickets, etc. And while I can call and ask them, I want to give them as little info as possible because I don't want it used against me later (mentioning throw-away tickets and the like begin to make airlines a bit nervous).

Looking at my travel plans, do you see an issue or think it should be fine?

Welcome to the forum Tony. Yep overthinking as AirAsia won't let you board unless you have an exit ticket, your flight to Mindanao is domestic and won't raise any problems.

Personally I've never had a problem with the 30 day problem that many go on about, 2 to 6 months was normal for me over the years and my last flight to Singapore 16 months ago I had a throw away ticket to hong Kong with a different airline,,,,,,, PAL let me for the return flight but never asked me for an exit ticket which was a different airline but and but immi wouldn't let me through and I had to go to another counter where they checked that I had an exit ticket and stamped my boarding pass to get me through immi,,,,,,,, that exit ticket to Hong Kong was 2 months out, no problems.

Good luck and sounds like you have covered all your bases.

Cheers, Steve.

Thanks Steve! I've asked around and it seems like the general consensus is that domestic flights don7t operate under the same guidelines - meaning, you're already in the country, so they just want a valid Govt issued photo ID (passport) and off you go.

Other than what I've learned from fellow members here on the Philippines forum, I'm not too familiar with the visa rules/regulations there. Apologies in advance if my question appears rudimentary.

Reading your post, I'm happy to hear that the "29-day extension" you mentioned can be applied for multiple times in succession. Is this so? I'm assuming it must be (you've obviously put some thought into this), otherwise you'd be in an over-stay position from Sep 29th - Oct 16th.

What costs are involved for your initial 30 day visa, and each "29 day" extension?

Hi Aidan and my apologies for jumping in over Tony to you both.

30 day visa free, the next 29 days is P3,030. Then you can extend every 2 months and the costs vary for some reason, the next 2 month block is the same as the 29 day extension and you will need an ACR1 application at US 50 bucks and valid for a year,,,,, basically it will cost around P22K per year, you can keep extending for up to 36 months then have to exit the country, on return the visa process starts again and yes you will need an exit ticket.

I have never been asked for an exit ticket either here in La Union or Manila with a visa extension at immigration.

I have been doing this for 5 years and we have a holiday when I have to exit.

Good luck.

Cheers, Steve.
