Internet Speeds - Fiber Optic availablity?

Hello everyone!   I will be coming to stay and live in Rach Gia later this year.  My work requires dependable high speed internet.  While I have visited VN many times, I have noticed that most hotels and "home-stays" are very "hit and miss" everywhere I have been in country.  More often a "miss" with horrible speeds that have impeded my work.  However, I have noticed great speeds at large cafes, so there must be decent high speed internet availability.

Can anyone speak to high speed internet availability brought into apartments or homes?  Money is not really an issue.  Dependable, high speed is absolutely necessary to me.

2.5GBs up to 10GBs through fiber optics is what I am really hoping for.  Is it possible anywhere in VN to individuals?

Finally, what is available in Rach Gia?

Thanks for any insights!

2.5GBps to 10GBps in the states are difficult to get so in a country like VN, you will be hard pressed to find a provider that will be able to give you that speed. You are also probably referring to Gbps which is different than GBps. The cost to run fiber to a house will be cost prohibited even if there's a fiber junction box nearby and an apartment will most likely not allow fiber to be brought into the building even if you are paying for the installation. If they agree, you will also need to run fiber or Cat 6 from the basement or wherever location the fiber goes into to your unit.

INTERNATIONAL Internet is so undependable--intermittently and without warning--that no one should plan on uninterrupted high speed Internet for international work.

Right now, only 2 of 5 international undersea cables are in service.

You could go for a week or so without a problem and then suddenly be without data for an undetermined length of time.

Customer service can't help with this.

Also, even though we have Viettel high speed Internet in our home, our ability to access USA servers via our VPN is pretty much non-existent most evenings between about 8 PM and 10 PM.

Some nights are better than others, but we've learned to take the bad with the good.

Believe me, unless you can tap into a currently unavailable ISP such as Starlink, there is no magic answer to this problem.

Good luck!

Connecting through my GF's phone data plan via USB tethering is better(?) but still sucks!

There are times when I swear I can count the electrons at the modem as they flow to-and-fro.

Vietnam have one of the highest fiber household penetration in Asia 90%+ , good providers are VNPT, Viettel or FPT

Price cheap and good , google example VNPT fiber 1gbps gia.

You can have 5G from end of the year in the big cities as 5G spectrum is allocated

(now only commercial 5G trial system and limited coverage)

Only challenge is sea cables, that will impact both fiber and 5G but it is still possible to work from home and been stable for a while

@Brian999 technically you don't need to be worried about how the connection enters to your house:  fiber or cooper are ok for speeds up to 100Mbps (with M), good enough for homes.

Viettel is the best internet provider in Vietnam, and all others such as VNPT and FPT are not bad.

I'm curios why  you need more than 2.5Gb (with G), those speed are used for big buildings or universities.

The big problem is if you need to open a VPN to connect into your server applications in USA, because Vietnam rents the route to America from VungTau- HongKong-California for a very low speed/price. Therefore, it doesn't matter if you have 50Mbps or 1Tbps, if you ping a server in America, the answer never will be bellow 300ms (talk with your IT Expert for further explanation and its consequences).

Hello

As another members said, maybe you can’t get the speed as you expect. However you can make it better.

I don't know about fiber optic, just want to share something else which I hope it's useful for you.

If you live in an apartment, maybe internet provider is monopoly, you can’t choose Viettel. (Example in Binh Duong Province, VNTT is the monopoly provider of apartments) I don’t know how Rach Gia is.

If you live in a rent house. You can choose Viettel.

At resorts, hotels, hostels, home-stays…internet is weak, because of the walls, and it’s better at cafes where don’t have many walls. You can buy a wifi extender to avoid ‘dead-corner’ where wifi can’t reach or weak. Example you put the modem at the living room, but you want to use laptop at the bedroom but speed in bedroom is slower than the living room, so you can plug in the wifi extender in bedroom. The wifi extender is small, you can take it everywhere. You can take it to hotels when you travel, just have to set up again through mobile app.

10 years ago, when I worked at hotel, we lived in basement of the hotel where the wifi was sooo weak, I saw a colleague used wifi extender to play game.

Viettel service center told me the fastest plan for home is STAR3 (≥ 300Mbps)  299.000vnd/month. But you can choose the better one MESHPRO1000 (1000Mbps / 10Mbps) 880.000 vnd/month. Actually MESHPRO1000 is for small and medium enterprise, but if you want to connect abroad to work, you can choose it.

So first time you will pay install fee: 300.000vnd, deposit: 300.000vnd (total: 600.000vnd), and then 880.000 vnd/month. (They have promotion if you choose 6 months plan)

If you choose the cheap plan, you should buy wifi extender to support. If you choose the expensive plan, I think no need extender.

And another notes: don’t put modem on metal surface, or next by mirror, microwave oven, Christmas tree, washing machine, fridge, computer screen, drone.

I’m not good at technical vocabularies. I hope you can understand what I said.

It doesn't matter what internet package speed you choose as that is only guaranteed for browsing within Vietnam.

As others have said it's the undersea cables and the Vietnamese government firewall that causes the bottleneck.
