Verification code abroad with new SIM card

Post new topic

Hello,

My partner and I paused our Rogers account before we left our home country so that we could buy a SIM card in Vietnam. Unfortunately, every bus and tour we attempt to book requires a verification code from Visa sent to our old number. We are travelling south east Asia for six months and it is not a viable option to turn on roaming every time we need to book something. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.😅

Thanks

Turn on roaming every time you need it.

Before you started your trip you might have been able to come up with an alternate plan, but probably not now.

Your only other option would be to port your phone number away from your current carrier to a Google Voice or Skype number.

But even then, Verified By VISA might not accept your reply through a VOIP.

Good luck

Hi there, and welcome to Vietnam 1f603.svg

I have the same trouble using my TD Bank visa card. The workaround I use is to call them on their toll-free line prior to submitting the payment (I use Skype, calling any toll-free # worldwide). Once I get the cc rep on the phone, and they verify my identity, they will either, a) lift the sms verification code requirement for either (my choice) a 15 minute or a 30 minute window, or, b) stay on the phone with me while I submit the payment and verify with me the amount/merchant the monies are to be paid to after receiving the request from the merchant for payment.

It's a bit of a pain, but it is a free service. Though probably not an option for you, what I do nowadays is to deposit the monies via TD's global transfer option into the account of a trusted local Vietnamese. They then pay the merchant for me via their local account.

I'm not sure about other credit card visa accounts, but I imagine the same option will be available to you by calling your visa company's customer service line. If you too use a TD cc, you'll note that on the back of the cc there is a toll free #. Unfortunately, that # is manned only during Canada EST business hours. If you do use TD, let me know and I'll PM you the fraud line toll free number.

I neglected to say that...

"If you do use TD, let me know and I'll PM you the fraud line toll free number ",

which is open 24hrs.
