wouldn't this be different for everyone as it will depend on some specific individual choices like, area (Access to Doctors / facilities) and which insurance you have ?

Preventative care isn't a thing here.  It's just beginning to be of interest.  Dominicans are genetically set up with several time bombs.  However most don't get checkups. We don't have primary care physicians or family doctors. No one has all your medical records so it's a crap shoot in many ways.

As expats we must take primary control and responsibility for our health.  Keep every x-ray and set of tests! At some point you are likely to need them.

You may find a doctor willing to act as your "family doctor".  But they are not trained as this. Every doctor wants to be a specialist as they get paid more!  And ask a lot of questions.  Here doctors are still considered as gods, not to be questioned.  That will not work for me, I go to another until I find one willing to discuss, explain and to answer my questions!

Coverage is very much dependent on the plan you have!

I should consider myself lucky, I have an internist/cardiologist. Who acts very much like a primary care doctor tracks all medical tests that she requests, and monitors my cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, blood pressure, and acts accordingly to bring them in line if required. . True that many Dominicans do not even go to a doctor on a yearly basis, it’s like if they don’t know anything about their health, then nothing is wrong, of course until it is too late

We've maintained our habit of going for yearly physicals since moving to DR. We do have a practice here in LT with two GPs, but I'm not sure they keep records of everything from year to year. I'm hypothyroid and was pre-diabetic, and since I'm rapidly approaching 60, I wanted to make sure to stay on top of any typical conditions that can occur with aging.

Like Planner says, preventive care is not really a thing here (I've tried getting a screening mammogram for 4 years!), so you have to be willing to take charge of your own health, be proactive, be persistent, and don't just take advantage of the fact that most "prescription" medications are OTC here and self medicate!
