I asked AI if a married woman in Brazil can continue using her maiden name on her passport and the answer was yes, there is no mandatory law requiring her to change or add my last name. Can anyone confirm has something changed.

I believe that when she gets married (and registers the marriage), her birth certificate will be changed to a marriage certificate, and the name on her passport will depend on the name she chooses to have on that marriage certificate.

My Brazilian wife chose her new name in our divorce.

Yes, because then she will have a divorce certificate, which replaces the marriage one, which in turn replaced the birth one (and maybe more marriage and divorce ones if there have been more marriages...)!

My wife used her maiden name and mine......Mrs Smith Jones...... for example. Told her she should have stayed Mrs Smith and avoided all the documentary changes afterwards. I don't care about the using the husband's name to be honest.

@Sharky114 Why take the chance?

The quickest way to ensure complications is to have conflicting information on your documents. Just because you hear or were told one thing does not mean that when the time comes, they won't feel differently and not allow it.

My Brazilian Permanent Residency is due to my Brazilian daughter because my Brazilian wife

had conflicting information and even though we were married in the USA,

we were not recognized in Brazil. Don't take the chance.

Make the necessary corrections.
