What is good in Hungary?

We lived in a village (certainly not Budapest), as for services we are very happy (probably meant for elderly people, but still).
Every year for elderly there was a package around Chrstmas and also Easter, there is a bus stop which can you bring (for pensioners) to Budapest (directly (please note that is a village of a few hunderd people), annual celebration (in summer with (admittedly not professional) concert.
Of course good to get votes, but for the elderly it is good.
What is good
-Virtually no crime
-Friendly people I have to say (very much so)
-Cheap properties (still)
-Easy life (assuming you can walk and drive a car), problem for me, but for others it will be fine
-Home deliveries (meat, wine, whisky)
-Flexible with gardeners (even if expensive)
-I have to say dealing with bureaucracy was easy (being part of Schengen helps)
-....
Decadent, true, but not too bad (apart from health)
Bad, not too much
-A very old GP (good I think, but 80+??)
-The restaurants (only a few were good and a car was needed (so no alcohol))
-For my wife, card does not work this time, ... (luckily my wife can be strong), message we/she can come back.
-Deteriation of restaurants (just for tourists and bad quality (over the years)), sad, very sad
-...
Why would public services only be for older people?
It is not like everyone over 65 is that much different then anyone else.
Wiser, not always, weaker, not always.
In Ca; our family doctor practiced well into his 80s.
He was the best doctor on earth.
I do not say that lightly either.
An old fashioned country doc who had morals and could be fully trusted.
I would almost perfer an older doctor with experience then one just out of school. As long as they are not suffering from dementia. Our GP knew his limits and had no issues sending anyone on to a specialist if needed.
IDK exactly what you mean about your wives card not working. I guess it is the national health card?
You may be able to pay any back fees and it will start up right away. She may have to wait a year to use it once she re applies or pay up front for the year and then it will start up straight away.
I know I had to pay for private coverage the first year then my Taj card worked with my monthly payment into the system.
That might be the best way to go for her since you have been gone from Hungary for years and paying any back dues would be a bit much.
If you really want to come back, it is possible.
PS, the only holiday perk we are getting is offered to many age groups and has nothing to do with your income. Not sure what other districts do but ours sent out a invite to collect a gift card.
20,000 forints per person. Not holding my breath here just to collect $50; or so bucks;
Nice but not a big deal.
It is always given to anyone under age 18.
Do not need the gift but never turn down a gift horse!
I thought it over a bit more.
I think you have couple of options for you wife to get a Taj card again;
Perhaps another poser know more but this is my take on it.
She can apply again in their office and wait a full year to be able to use the service. Or,
She can pay up a full year ahead of time and use the card right away;
In my case as a 3rd country citizen of the US I was given those options;
It has been awhile so I may of forgotten some details.
I paid for a private health coverage because I was super healthy and overall it was cheaper to do that then pay into the Taj that year; Could just see a private doctor is anything came up.
After the year without having to pay into Taj, I was able to start monthly payments and use my card.
My husband as a HU citizen had to pre pay his first year in Hungary and was not allowed to use the system that first year. His second year in HU he was good to go, could use the Taj but did not have to pay in the second year as they considered it a prepay the year before;*On his 3rd year he just paid every month before the due date.
A bit confusing but that is how it went.
I know in the US if one does not pay into the medicare system they add a fee on every year that you were not in.
Say way back 12 years ago my husband could be part of medicare at the going rate at the time. Now his monthly rate to join is higher for every year he opted out.
I know if we move back to the US we will need to prove we had health coverage the last 12 years so not to be over charged for having no coverage those years.
It is easier here in HUngary.
As far as healthcare, it is very fine in Turkey, never saw such a good service, still I am very concerned (even if treatment was very personal and good), I had a lung emboly (which seems to be a serious situation), I spent a week in the hospital with loads of treatments (paid by health insurance by the way), they wanted to keep me more, but I said enough is enough, I want to go home.
Loads of medicines, but from time I wonder, perhaps better without?
I have to add in Hungary is not bad at all (from my experience)
My brother has prostate cancer (in the Netherlands), waiting, waiting, , lets see what result will be with treatments (even with excellent insurance)
What is a TJA card ?
i have duel citizenship. ( US/ Hungarian)
can I use my insurance from USA in Hungary or I am qualified to get a Hungarian insurance?
I am sorry, looked up what a lug emboly is.
Seems to start by a blood clot in the legs.Serious stuff.
I am a armchair nurse or whatever, perhaps a change of diet and a bit more mild walking, exercise can help?
Take is easy though, do not have to walk miles or lift heavy weights.
Your brother, sad, I know my brother passed 2 years ago from colon cancer. I have no idea how he was stage 4 before he checked out medical care; He had A plus health care with his airline job.
I am grateful for the 63 years he was with us. He almost did not make it as an infant due to not being able to tolerate milk. Mom should of nursed him but by the time she knew he could not take formula, it was too late. He was put on soy milk but it took weeks to find the right mix for him.
My very best closest friend from age 15 passed in 2020, just weeks before that covid stuff in the US was news.
She had high blood pressure but overall was doing fine.Her husband had prostrate cancer and the stress of his illness plus a long time court case with her 2 older brothers did her in. They say she had the flu but it probably was covid.
Her husband seems just fine now. He shares my BD. The one day of the year I check in on him is on our BD.
I feel a bit strange being in contact with him because of our shared loss.
What I mean to say is a diagnosis of cancer is not always a death sentence. I hope he will be fine.
My 77 year old husband was told to get some lab work by our new GP; That was a good year ago. He never followed up on it. He never uses the Taj system unless it is down to the wire. he distrusts doctors and overall I do as well.
Vitamins, relaxing, doing a bit of exercise and drinking enough water is better then pumping your system full of drugs from the doctors.
There is a time for medical help and a time to reflect on self care.
Drink some beet juice, it is great for the circulatory system, just boil up some fresh beets and drink the juice;

IDK what sort of US coverage you carry but in Hungary I know they do not except, medicad, medicare. They have their own system called Taj.
If you are a dual citizen I think for sure you can get a Taj card. They can tell you exactly what has to be done in your case.
Probably like my husband went through. Have to prepay for the first year and the second year is covered. He paid every month for the first year so not a large investment all at once. After the 2nd year it is month to month although if you are going out of country you can pay in advance to make sure there is no lapse in coverage. When we vacation we pre pay for 6 months or longer.
IDK exactly where their office is located ATM.
I suppose you could look it up online; My care title is; Hatosagi Igazolvany
It is reasonable here, less then $40. per month and covers some dental as well.

I wouldn't ignore the tests asked for by the GP. My FIL had an embolism. Previously he'd been given blood thinners as he was at risk. He ignored their advice - possibly as he wanted to keep drinking and getting drunk - and did not take the medication. He had pains in his leg and in his pelvis but tried to ignore it for a week with his wife doing his bidding and not getting medical help. In the end, it was too much, the ambulance took him to the hospital but it was too late for him and he died about a week later.
All because he thought he thought he knew what he was doing better than the docs and liked the palinka bottle more than life.
I agree one has to keep an eye on the docs and everything should be questioned. I'd say the docs have to be double or triple checked. But generally they don't ask for these things for no reason.
@Marilyn Tassy
Apologies, I meant to write lung emboly
A guy we know was flying from Hawaii to Hungary with his 2 minor aged sons.
In Ca; they took him off the plane by ambulance to the hospital because of a blood clot in his leg.
His sons flew on alone to Hungary;
He was in hospital a couple of weeks before he was allowed to fly to Hungary.
This happened I would say, 20 some years ago, he was probably around 50 at the time.
So far as we know, he is doing fine but got the treatments he needed.
I also would say taking vitamins D and K2 are a good idea;
