Balikbayan box checked baggage

jcole4455

Hello all, I’m looking for someone who has recently traveled from the U. S. to the Philippines and used a Balikbayan box as a checked bag. What size box did you use, and did you have any issues at your departure airlines? Thanks in advance.

I looked into this, albeit not in great detail.  From what I found the balikbayan box is still subject to each airlines luggage rules.  I was limited to 50 lbs x2 bags (economy) or 70 lbs x3 bags (business class).  I decided to stuff one large suitcase with pasalubong and fly business class due to the length of the flight.   It makes sense if delivery time is important...but does not make financial sense.  I am retiring to the PI permanently, so that was my best option.  I hope the gave you some insight?

We always send a couple of boxes by sea two months before we return to the Philippines.  It is cheaper per pound and less restrictive, gets delivered to our door in Ilocos Sur.  Still use two 50 pound suitcases for free on our flight.
