Hi all,

is it difficult for expats to open a bank account in Madagascar ?

Which documents are required to open a bank account in Madagascar ?

How long does it take to open it ?

Is there any restriction for expats regarding the services (loans for instance)  ?

Which bank would you recommend ?

Thanks in advance for your participation,

Julien

Hi Julien,

I am an individual client of BNI Madagascar. For your information Banque des Mascareignes (Mauritius)also has a branch in madagascar and here are the information you may require:

1. 2 copies of your passport
2. 4 passport sized photographs
3. A minimum deposit of 400,000 Ariary
4. A certified copy of your landlord proving that you live in madagascar ( a friend can provide this document)
5. A certified copy or original of a "Jirama" electricity bill.

I would recommend the BNI which has a good network- issues VISA Cards which is generally more acceptable in Madagascar than mastercards. Bank fees are relatively high though (in contrast to Mauritius) and may be up to 30,000 ariary monthly on a current account around €12. MCB & SBM (mauritius) are bith present but do not ATM's.

Account numbers are available within 24 hours the documents have been made available to the BNI. As for loan, you would excuse my ignorance of the malagasy system.
