My husband and I moved to Malta a couple of years ago and we love living here - sun, friendly locals and cheap vino - what's not to like?!!

As I don't know my way around the forum, I am not sure if this subject has already been covered.  Can we record (either dvd or pvr) from satellite tv?  (No, we haven't satellite - wouldn't dream of it!!

Thanks.

Toon

yes you can

Welcome to Expat-Blog.

There are lots of ways and it will depend on what you don't have ;)

Hi,

of course you can record from satellite tv but what do you mean by you don't have satellite ? Whether you send the signal to the tv or to a dvd or video recorder doesn't make a difference.

Without a satellite aerial(dish) and satellite receiver you can't receive satellite tv !

Cheers
Ricky

Thanks everyone for your replies.  Yes, we have satellite tv via a Dreambox (was trying not to admit it, due to the illegality of same!).  I do need more help please, as I am absolutely clueless about technical things.  We also have a Melita HD box which is a PVR, so recording off that is no problem (except there is never anything much we want to record!).  My husband suffered a stroke years ago and is reliant on the tv, and it would make a huge difference if he could record more programmes - it would be better for me too!  Thanks.

its not illegal to have a dreambox - its not illegal to own one or use one - its the card sharing that it does that is illegal - if your DB is cinfigured to actually card share - IMHO you are still not acting illegally other than paying someone to do it for you and receiving illegal broadcasts.

To you r question its only a matter of having the dreambox in the right place in your set up..... i.e it should be placed in this order

sat dish - cable - to DB - then from DB scart or comp_to dvd  recorder scart or comp - then from dvd recorder scart hdmi or comp to tv scart comp or hdmi  ....so the signal and thus the channels go via the dvd to your tv. connections types and cable will depend on your equipment and choice.

Thanks "toonarmy".  I think I understand.  Do you know if I can use (and purchase) a PVR in Malta which would work?  Thanks.

Toon

I think DB do a later model (assuming you have a 500s) with PVR capablilty built in - the 600pvr model does what you ask i think, and it does it without needing a dvd unit. But be wary there is a big legal move to terminate the administrators of the card sharing dreambox services. I suppose really you need to consider what you watch and then make the correct choice and purchase of a system that will give you this functionality. What is it you mainly watch and want to record.?

Hi Toonarmy, thanks for the info.  Yes, I am aware of the situation with Dreambox and am dreading losing satellite TV.  If only the BBC would allow us to pay for and use iplayer (or whatever it's called).  My husband is very limited in what he can understand, but he likes things like CSI (although I don't think has a clue what's going on in CSI most of the time, but then neither do I!!), Renegade, The Mentalist and such like.  He also likes a good action movie.  I am wondering about UK Nova, but there again, all the torrent services are apt to suddenly disppear (or so I am led to believe).  If you have any ideas they would be most welcome.  PS is that your cat?!!!
