Snail Mail

Am trying figure out what to do with the snail mail (not email) that we still receive and want to continue to receive while overseas.  THere are a couple of magazines and journals, the occasional card and letter, and packages.

How feasible is it to have my mail forwarded to a family member and packaged up once a month for shipping to Libya?  Can we expect packages like for birthday and Christmas gifts to make it unscathed and in timely fashion to us?

One country I've lived in was nortorious for "inspecting" all packages, and levying exhorbitant taxes upon them in order to release.  If one refused to pay the taxes and told them to send it back, the workers would often simply keep the contents for themselves.  The taxes were more like ransom.

As far as I know, we won't have access to APO or diplomatic mail.

I'm having mail (a couple of magazines for Mrs Sand) sent to the company's PO Box address in Tripoli. Someone from the company goes to the post office once a week to collect the mail.

As for outgoing mail, send it off with an outgoing traveller to post.

It is easy to open a PO Box in Tripoli, at least in Hay al Andalus area.

You will need to fill a request in arabic of course, a copy of your passport & residency, and 21 dinars for one year advance payment.

I've activated one, about one week ago as I am plannig to transfer my mail from Paris, but I still did not test how reliable it is...

hi expat joe (and all)

I was just wondering how the PO Box was working out for you.

Any problems?

Hello there,

Well overall it is quite acceptable.
However it is also very unreliable, as I stop receiving mail for one complete week...

Cheers

Not sure if this is an option for you but we get all our mail sent to the company headquarter office and they forward it to us every 2 weeks via DHL, it seams to work very well as when we move countries effectively our mailing address does not change and as it comes in under DHL we have never had issues with customs.

So, Joe, although mail may be delayed in getting to your PO Box, you do recieve everything?  Had a PO Box in Kuwait and I only recieved half of what I was usually expecting... Where do you recieve mail from?
