Teaching ESL in Southeast Asia

Post new topic

karlb

Hi there,
I am a New Zealand native English speaker wanting to come to Southeast Asia next year, either Cambodia or Vietnam and teach ESL.
I was considering doing a online TESOL course before I came, but have heard many mixed reviews about them mostly being that they have no value there.
I am after some opinions on this either from people who are teaching or have done TESOL courses.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks Karl

Do not do an online course.  Do a face-to-face course.  Almost all of the better schools and opportunities will be closed to you, unless you do.

Make sure that it's at least a 100-hour course (120 is better) with no less than 4-6 hours of observed teaching practice.

I am a teacher trainer and mentor that has been living and working, on and off, in SE Asia for the last 10 years.

I would recommend that you go to Thailand or Vietnam to do your course, get a feel what living in Asia is like.  It's more cost-effective and a better transition into a completely different lifestyle.

With your new qualifications...start the job hunt.

You should do a bit of research to see when schools hire, when terms start...etc.  Not all countries are the same and most don't follow the NZ school calendar that you would be familiar with.
