Hi Friends,

I have been relatively new to this place, (2 months), I would like to ask, How best the weekend can be spent apart from being confined in the 4 walls of the house and Internet... Any good suggestions.... Like sports activity or a get together !!!

Regards

Alliecat

I have a suggestion; it's something I've seen done before with good results.

You make plans to go somewhere by yourself--let's say, Starbucks.  And you post here, in the morning, that you will be at Starbucks on Olaya from 4-6 today.  You say what you'll be wearing (white shirt/jeans) so they can find you.  And then invite anybody who would care to come and hang out for a few hours.

What I see so often see on the forum is everybody asking what is there to do and nobody actually doing anything!  Why not just be impromptu??

Best of luck :)

i am usually busy every weekend. this is the first time i am stuck in my home (studying). kinda nice to be home for a change. anyways my activities this month. safari in the desert, camping with bedouins, touring some historical sites, horseback riding. also met up with an actor (movie will be released in april called battleship). what is an actor doing in saudi? hmmm also met some football player again in saudi but they r from brazil.  learning how to make traditional arab bread. been to bahrain. usually its like this most of the time. met some nice ladies from my home town south africa and had lunch with them. u just have to know the right people and life can be interesting. and more importantly be a go getter, life is going by too quickly so u gotto grab any opportunity that comes ur way.

Thanx AllieCat for the nice suggestion, but somehow saw ur reply quite late, will try this for the next weekend for sure !!

what do you mean by 'any uncle'?

imraan007

I know that some people out of respect refer to elderly ppl as uncle like in English we would use sir. This is also used in Arabic language. It's not by relation but rather respect. In Arabic they would say aama alliecat meaning aunt alliecat showing affection or respect. On the other hand some don't like this as it implies ur old :p

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... so he's afraid of older people?  I thought he was referring to a gay man!

:lol::lol::lol:

BTW, I thought the term for older men out of respect was 'baba'?

imraan007

Yes that too if he is like maybe more than 50

But let me say this.. if danishluv is confining himself to people his same age (same race? same nationality? same language?), no wonder he sits at home watching TV 24/7 on weekends.

One VERY positive thing I can say about being in KSA is the variety of people there are here!!  So many  nationalities, ages, colors  and we're all looking for friends.  This is different from home because at home, people already have established lives and often times don't have room in their lives for more people.  I think this is how it is for the Saudis here--this place is their 'established life.'  But for the rest of us?? Especially those of us here without family?  We're anxious for friends!

I've had the opportunity here to become friends with people very  similiar to me (western, English speaking, same age range) but I've also made friends with people totally unlike myself (much younger, much older, different language... race, the whole '9 yards').

And these friendships with those who are different havebeen the most gratifying!  So .. if you're an uncle or an aunt, a grandchild or niece or nephew .. if you're black, white or inbetween .. what does it matter???  What matters is being a good person, intelligent and fun (those are my criteria and I highly recommend them!).

imraan007

Hey....never thought of it in this way but it makes sense, no wonder I keep coming back here. Possibly I search of a community. Humans are social beings and we need to fill the gap of being in a community

YES!  It's why people become 'lifers' in the military--they've found a home, a community that they've become a part of.

I don't understand danishluv's rationale: 'how can pass the time with a person you don't know'  because you don't know ANYBODY at the beginning.  You pass time with them and *that's* how you get to know, that's how they become a friend!

Give it a try, danishluv, and you might not have to spend as much time in your room alone :)

Good to see ur guys comments and debates.... Keep them coming on.... Atleast I'm busy reading people's views and notions....

Anyways great going.....:lol::lol::lol::lol:

AHM AHM, didnt read all discussions but it seems that all discussing against me, but no one wanna understand. No one want to pass time at home, but life in Jeddah like this, if u already have friends that belongs to ur neighbour, no matter age or nationality, u can go out and pass time. But other option i think not good for this city, most people here r arrogant, and u cant interfere in other life,

And one more thing, my comments make this discussion little entertaining, especially for Saimans, hehe

RedGoblin

Yeah Saturday morning, after checking up with all th stuff that I have to do at work.. reading some of these comments sure takes the blues away from it all..

saimans

Hahaha, Danish Luv i completely agree with u..... Ur comments are really great and does keep this thread goin on.... An atleast i can see different views of people...

danish luv

You're right about different points of view.  I guess one's attitude is how one views life.  Is the glass half empty or half full?  I always see it as half full :)
