angelomb3

last nyt i met a large group of people marching near our bldg, going towards the presidents place i think..as an expat i find it intimidating and worrisome though they tell us not to worry..

yeah i wish everything will be back to normal..after all what is affected is the peace and order and eventually the economy on which our jobs are dependent upon..

mooch

Hi Guys,

seems like you guys a quite worried about the situation in Maldives,

firstly we would like to apologize for all those who are trouble due to the situation. as out country comes first there are certain things that we as citizens of Maldives must do to, ensure that a elected government runs the country, and to ensure that our traditions, culture, economy, etc are passed on to the next generation without harm/damage.

coming to the question should you be worried? for those who live and work on male, you should try to avoid where there is a crowd, it is very likely that the police will use pepper spray, water canon & tear gas, the red zones are, near Parliament house and blocks around them, republic square and blocks around  it, from bank of maldives to the end of republic square, presidents palace and blocks around it, VP house and blocks around it starting from salsa royal till sto trade center, these are pretty much the areas that you should really avoid if there is any crowd and police with riot gear..

other than that you might get waken up early hours of the mornings with groups of motorcyclists or groups of people marching from one point to another, there is no danger atall,

all the protests are peaceful, though police and the army use brutal force to crack down on the protesters....

as majority of the Maldivians wants early election, a coup military government hidden by a president rejects to have early election...

the situation in male will continue to be the same, if not there is always a good chance that it could get violent.

from MDP , we try our level best to educate out supporters to not to get provoked by police, and we have managed to keep everything under control since the 17th of February till now...

if there is any violence, it was purely from police and the army. (after the 17th of feb)

so wish you well and i would like to advice all of you to avoid any large crowds and not to be wait to see what is going on/to see the show.....AS WE DO NOT WISH/WANT ANY OF THE TOURISTS/EXPATS TO BE ANY KIND OF HARM, PEPPER SPRAY OR TEAR GAS, WE DO NOT WANT YOU TO EXPERIENCE THAT UNLESS YOUR A JOURNALIST AND YOU WERE COVERING A STORY.

hope this helped to give you all a much clear picture about the  current situation in maldives.

regards to all

Hi Mooch, i just arrived in Male 2 days ago. So far i haven't seen any big commotion related with the govt issues to scare the hell out of me. However, the reckless riders on the streets makes me more worried than anything else...

mooch

Hi Eve,

that is true, if there is anything you should really worry about in male are those reckless motorbike riders...

edvilyn

..and the "RUDE PEOPLE IN THE ROAD" too... :nothappy:

and oohhh...last Monday March 19, had a big rally..
They are prostesting in front of my place... around 6pm-8pm..

My place is a "danger zone" now... :|
