Hi there,

I have moved to Vancouver from Sydney, Australia approximately 8 months ago hoping to be nursing here. I am a registered nurse back home and am having alot of trouble with the College of Registered Nurses, BC.

I am wondering if there is anyone else that has come here and is having difficulty getting registered with them?

Thanks Laura

Hi Laura,

I am not a nurse but do know a few through our relocation business. I have a page on our web site about nursing which goes through the process of getting registered. Maybe you have done that already, but if not make sure you are going through the process.

From what I hear the unions here are quite protective of jobs and make it hard for people to get registered, but it can be done. After all there is supposed to be a shortage of nurses.

Warmly,

Frank

Thanks for that website, Frank. Have been through all those avenues... just having problems with a new policy they implemented at the end of last year....

Laura,
let me know if there's any changes I can make to the web page to cover the new policy. Perhaps one of my nurse contacts would be able to help if you let me know more specifically what you need.

The new policy basically was implemented in December 2008 and is to do with the assessment of international nurses applications. Its called the SEC assessment of which i had to complete in childrens and mental health nursing but now CRNBC have come back to me and said that i have to do an extra course at uni before they will give me my temporary registration. Also they are not giving up my records that easily... now i am having to go through the privacy commissioner to get my records.
The website for the assessment is http://www.nursinginbc.ca/

Hi Laura,
thanks for the information. You do seem to be battling which is not a great introduction to Canada I am sorry to say.

Can I suggest that you join and post on the Brits2Vancouver yahoo group since there are definitely some nurses on that. They are a friendly bunch in general too, so useful for occasional meet up's etc. Not all Brits either!
