Accommodation Needed in Chennai

Hi,

I just arrived last night and will be here about 3 months (maybe longer). I was shown a very nice room to live in with a family (10000 month including breakfast), but it seems very far from the main city area (northwest) and difficult to get anywhere from the house.
Does anybody have any ideas of a good area to live in, fairly easy to find things to do in the city etc...?
I'm fine living with a family, sharing a place as long as I have my own room, bathroom and some privacy. Or, living alone, as well.
