Hi guys, I have just been reading through posts and it has made me feel a little better about it all as it isn't as hard as I thought it would be. I am 1/4 maltese, sadly all my family that lived in Malta have passed now but I have always wants to live there, I am 20 now so why not! Im terrified but it has always been my dream. All I need is to find a job and a place I can afford to live.

What are the main things I need to know to move to Malta?

Hi, if I may say so you are young enough to be positive, open minded, flexible and not expect things to be the same as they are from where you come from. Too many are the opposite and moan and groan about so much. With your youth on your side, I am positive you'll fit straight in.
There is a LOT of information on this blog, just read through the threads on the topics at the top of the Forum page. Have a good read then you can ask specific questions relevant to yourself and your ambitions. We are here to help but you need to be specific so we can help you best. Also be honest about yourself, what you like, dislike or want to try. I wish you the very best of luck and just ask away :)

mantonas

Hello Stephanie and welcome to the forum!

I couldn't agree more with remik (I am starting to get worried...joking :D)
But it's exactly as remik said, with the youth on your side, I am positive you won't have any problems to settle in easily. If you're willing do work hard in the beginning and maybe sharing accommodation for the 1st few months you get here, you'll be fine. I cannot assure you gonna get a job straight away in case you come here without a job, but if you're really willing to work, you'll find something, for sure.

You will definitely find a lot of useful information on previous posts about accommodation, work, cost of living, etc, just take your time to go through some of the posts.

But anyway, best of luck for whatever you decide to do :)

Cheerio,
Antonio

Thank you guys for taking time to reply to me. Brilliant I really hope I do settle in if I decide to come. I havn't yet found a place I am happy to call 'home' but Malta is the one place I know for sure I will feel at home. I have read through quite a lot but I will continue doing so.

Thanks again.

Steph :) xx

I could never regard the UK as my home, I've been itinerant for all my life, (far more places than the flags show.) Feels like home to me here though :)

Toon

just for balance - this feels like home as am pleased to get back to it when weve been away - but for us we also know its not our choice of final resting place....we know we will leave as we know it hasnt ticked all the boxes for us... its not all things to all men..but what is? but its not bad overall - its all down to your own choices and what you wish to make of whats on offer..... life here as with everywhere else is as they say what you make it There are things i love about the place and there are things i hate and cannot accept but are to a certain degree tolerable for a while. so we have made our choice..... its a long term plan in its early stages of design but it wont be here......

good luck

GuestPoster566

I know that Lynn will return to the UK if anything happens to me.
I don't know what I would do if the situation is reversed.
Don't like to think too much about it but we have a full contingency plan in place should she have to return alone :(

Like you Red we have talked about this and we have both agreed assuming we are still here at that time that we will stay put - neither of us will return to the UK unless there are major changes at an EU level.

When we move and we will (as their is no IF barring the above scenario) it will be to another country but defo not UK.

I know its not nice talking about theses things (incl wills) but its something that everyone must do.

GuestPoster566

I agree that this should be planned, it's the responsible thing to do and everyone should plan for this, especially if not living in their own country. Legalities are different and everything needs to be planned. All possibilities need to be covered. As soon as I was admitted into hospital Lynn immediately opened her own bank account and transferred half our joint account funds to ensure she had access to sufficient funds if the other account was to become 'frozen' for a while. We have discussed so many options but for Lynn, it's to go back to UK, one reason we keep one property rented out there. (We will probably sell the other when possible.) For me, it will depend upon many factors prevailing at the time and what my needs may be. But hey, tomorrow's another day :)

Toon

yes it is Red and good luck but more importantly good health - although both can go hand in hand.

You can only stay for 90 days as a visitor and within that time you must apply for residency if you intend etc stay longer. How much money do you have? Where are you going to work? Why Malta? Where will you live?
Seems to me you have no real plan. Have you been here before? How well do you know the islands? What is your line of work?

Toon army has got it spot on !
If you don't have to work, then loving life here !!!
I'm a foreign health professional and we get well paid by Maltese standards but the working hours are seriously crazy !!!
80/90/100 hour weeks are commonplace here so if you are looking for a reasonable work/life balance , forget it cos it does not happen here !
The rosters are quite frankly ridiculous and are set up so as you will normally only get one rest day at a time !
My advice would be , earn your money elsewhere and retire here , the climate is fantastic , even in winter !!!
Lots of positive things about the place though and some of my Maltese colleagues are the nicest people you could meet !
It's worth a try, but I would say the professions are your best bet , unskilled work is very poorly paid !

Won't to work in malta as a plasterer wots the work like and wot does it pay

GuestPoster566

I don't know what the work is like as I am not a plasterer but I doubt if there will be any work for you and even if so the pay will be very low. Work in the construction industry and associated trades is very 'closed shop'.
May I suggest something? For a first post and if asking for something it would be good if you were to introduce yourself?
Help us to help you.

ricky

The wage is minimum (around 5 €/hour) and it will be difficult to find any work as the competition is on with irregular immigrants. I see a lot of them doing this kind of work.

Working conditions are very bad here in Malta in the construction industry

Why do you want to work as a plasterer in Malta Karlos?

Cheers
Ricky

Hi,

I'm am coming out next month to visit the island and figure out where the best areas are to live. Hubby intends to continue working for a uk company, as he is home based and just needs a decent broadband connection. I am a QBE accountant with 13 years experience, so hoping I should be able to find work relatively fast. Although I won't need to work immediately.

Our 5 year old son will be 7 when we move (summer 2015), so going to visit a private school and a state school while we are there.

We are not overly keen on living in a heavily ex pat community, so any suggestions of places would be great. Also are there some ares of Malta where the broadband is poor? Need at least 30MB.

Just thought I would say hi :-)

Welcome  Claire
You don't say if you have been to Malta before but it is a very small island and finding places that don't have an expat community of some sort will be difficult.
Broadband should not be a problem as Malta has pretty good connection speed but you get what you pay for.

Plenty of information on here to read just pick one of the forum categories at the top right and away you go.

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the reply. I have been before, but I was a child. I grew up in Canada, and have lived all over in England. So don't mind change, my husband is South African and he doesn't mind change either.

We are looking for a place to live where we can rely on the weather most of the time for enjoying outside life. I am hoping to go diving most weekends, and know Malta has some fab dive sites. Financially we would be better off, as the cost of living is 50% cheaper than what we are currently paying, and we would be paying less tax too. This means we can save faster to buy a property in Malta.

I have nothing against ex pats at all, but moving to Malta is for the lifestyle and culture. Living in an all ex-pat area could take away this experience? I am going by what it was like growing up in Canada, this was the case in the small town we lived in, as it was mainly English/Scots/Irish. So my parents only socialized with ex-pats, and not experienced the Canadian people. It is good to socialise with other Ex-pats, as they know what you are going through, but I hope to develop friendships with Maltese people too.

Claire.

Yorkeh

Good afternoon everyone,

This thread so far has been relatively insightful and I thought I'd add to the discussion whilst seeking greater clarification :)

I've been contemplating a move to Malta for some time, being 21 such a move would be in order to indulge in a new culture and hopefully find a more healthy lifestyle to the one I currently have in the UK. I'm not particularly picky when it comes to work, and given the time of year I can only presume that the jobs market will be bubbling (as far as the Maltese jobs market is concerned) in anticipation for the holiday season. Being young means I have quite a lot of flexibility and little to lose even if such a move failed to work out (but my ego and a little bit of my savings of course). I also have a couple of business ideas I'd like to pursue that I think would be complementary to the Maltese/Southern Europe/Ex-pat/Tourist market, but without being in Malta conducting market research nor pursuing the venture I simply have no idea whether there is much success to be had. The main benefit is that it'll require little start-up costs, so again there would be little to lose. I wouldn't expect it being any less than a long shot regardless!

The thing I desire most quite frankly is a kick up the arse :D As a result, I'd love for anyone planning on moving/have made the move/can help in any way to message me.

Much appreciated.

About what?  :/

I wasn't expecting such a prompt reply  :top:

I'd simply love to hear more about people's individual experiences who are in a similar position to myself, a lot of posters on here never seem to keep the thread updated of their exploits. I'd also like to meet people contemplating such a move, find out what they want to achieve from it, how they plan on going about it etc. Such a move would be easier if you do it with others/ are familiar with people who have already gone through it.

As for specific questions, I've mentioned the jobs market and the holiday season, which month(s) would you envisage to be the optimum time for finding work?

ricky

Hi Yorkeh,

welcome to the forum.

You didn't really say much to reply on. What kind of work are you looking for ? What qualifications do you have.? Healthy lifestyle in Malta? I'm not sure what you expect. Working in Malta means long hours and low pay unless you are highly qualified and speak several languages.

Most hotels and restsaurants are recruiting now for the summer but there are always lots of vacancies as the fluctuation is very high.

Cheers

In terms of work, pretty much anything that can pay the bills, hotels and restaurants as you have listed would be the first port of call. I'm degree educated in Bioscience which could potentially open up jobs from pharmaceuticals to eco-tourism but I'm unfamiliar with these job markets and their competitiveness on the Maltese islands.

A healthy lifestyle to me is being somewhere culturally rich and enthralling, with abundant opportunities to pursue physical and social activities but yet still remain easy going and relaxing. Not just the weather which of course would play a major part. A fresh start is what is most needed as things have become rather monotonous.

Given my flexibility a move doesn't have to be permanent and therefore hopefully would be at least a summer long excursion, and at most a wealth of opportunity.

ricky

Hi Yorkeh,

then go for it !

The summer season ist starting now!

I'm still not sure what why you are looking at Malta with your degree in Bioscience .Pharmaceutical companies in Malta are mostly 'Copy-Cat' generic drug companies based on producing cheap and paying cheap.

I would say enjoy a sunny season in Malta and then go for a serious and well-paid job somewhere else ! Just my opinion ...-)))

Have you visited Malta in the past?

Cheers

Producing cheap and paying cheap, huh? Experience is experience, it's probably by far the most important step to finding a well paid job anywhere!

I have not visited Malta, this would be a first :) Although I have visited other Mediterranean regions before, away from tourist areas, so would say that I have a relatively sound perspective of what to expect.

I've been looking at flat shares, plenty are advertised around the 200 Euro mark in the Swieqi/Sliema regions. I'd probably have to set myself a one month deadline for achieving self sufficiency and I've come across one or two flats that allow for a minimum tenancy of one month, but not all are clear enough in this respect. How common would you say this to be? It's certainly not something I've ever heard of in the UK :|
