Yes, tropical ulcers are the bane of expats life in Vanuatu. Hubby suffered with them very badly for the first year, mainly scratches/cuts below the knees and hands. We are not absolutely certain on this, but we wonder if they get infected so quicky by the flies. Within seconds of a scratch, flies are on it. So it's imperative to dress these immediately. By the second year (for him, anyway) most scratches didn't turn to ulcers.In hindsight, maybe that is due to him covering an injury immediately . Or maybe one gets immune, or something similar. Our Ni Van workers rarely get tropical ulcers, and they are bare foot, most of the time.
