After weeks of excitement i have finally arrived, In the 4 days i have been here i have felt many emotions. Some of these emotions i have never felt in my in my entire life such as loneliness and the feeling of being lost.
My advice to anyone looking to move here is not to expect to much and socialise, sign up to a social club, get internet access and take each day as it comes.
Good luck
I hope u do have some friends / ppl when u get back home..... else this place can get on to u ....
Hi Kymadoce,
I have met some great people on my compound so that has been one of the things that has kept me sane. I also have fantastic friends back home in the UK which i am in constant contact with.
I'm still trying to get used to the heat and wearing an abaya but i'm sure with time i should become content.
tht's grt! m sure soon enuf u wud find many ppl from UK & elsewhere on this forum itself to connect as well as arnd in the city.... i do believe the embassies also hold get togethers ....
Welcome to the city and grt tht u work in a hospital.... this place does need more caring and considerate medical personnel....
good luck for ya sis its a good place to work in and i bet u wont feel loonley here ..... stay safe and feel free to ask what u like
good luck to ya .....with love MUKH

Miss_Unique.
Welcome there are plenty of us Brits about so if you feel low in the first few weeks you just need to go online and call for help. I'm over at the Arabian Homes Compound just north of the military airport in the centre of town.

Martin
Thanks guys, Martin i'm thinking about attending some of the events held by the British embassy but i heard that they are invite only so we will see.
hi miss unique, i wish you luck. i contemplated an offer to join kfh but put it on the shelf for now. will revisit in the coming years. i hope you find your flow and trust you will build a good network with the ksa forum group. they're the wittiest group on this site
cheers,
Thanks for the advice Suzie Que, im sure i will settle soon. From what i have seen the hospital is decent and the staff seem nice enough

You may want to have a look at the posting from britgirly

All you have to do is join Corona Worldwide,
I think it was around 165SAR for a the year. I think you can just come along and join
coronaworldwide.org/node/2

Martin
Oo hi, that was me!
Yes definitely join Corona Ladies, it's really nice. They won't be doing any events till after Ramadan now but it's totally worth it.
I understand how you feel with the mixed emotions/lonelyness etc.
I've found it quite difficult to make new friends (dunno what that says about me! haha) so it can be a tad lonely.
Working in a hospital though means you'll work with/meet people much easier
Just gotta soldier on I guess!!
I'm very sorry to learn about your challenges in Saudi. I've been here since October of last year, and I'm still getting adjusted. That said, I think that you will eventually find your niche socially and things will work out better for you.
Guys
I found this link whist looking for a contact for the 3rd Herd Hash Harriers!
http://www.vinnellarabia.net/mwr.htm
It has a list of all sorts of activities and contacts.
Still haven't found what I am looking for so if anyone has any details of the 3rd Herd please let me know :-)
Running and walking I'm the heat sounds fun with 200 like minded nutters!
Hi Martin the third heard group gets together every Friday, they meet nearby the KFSH hospital. If you have your own car you could show up at the pick up point and offer a ride to some people waiting there for rides, they are always looking for more drivers!

Hi guys,
Also enjoy reading the responses to this thread. What are you all doing in Saudi? I see a number of you working at a hospital. Are you medical practitioners?
Hey,
If you're interested in getting dolled up, something cool is happening soon... IS there not some way I can invite you... without inviting all of you (no offence ppl).

Hi Miss_Unique,
Obviously you will have worked out by now that you are not alone!
I can tell you that in my first couple of years after leaving the UK I had never cried so much in my whole life as I did in that period but at the same time I had never had so many happy times/experiences either.
Leaving family & friends is tough to put it mildly but in the end if you can stick it out, I doubt you will regret it.
Keep your chin up and enjoy the moment
Good luck!
Feel the fear, but do it anyway!

But are you in the Emirates or KSA? If you're in Dubai, you have NO idea what it's like here in Saudia.
Hello Alliecat,
I now live in Dubai but previously I have lived in KSA so I do know what it is like to live there.
Kind regards

Hi, okay good .. because some people I've met who live in the UAE seem to think the Middle East is all the same. As you know, this sure isn't the case!!
Oh yes, it's definitely different!
Hi Loulou 84 and miss unique Im a nurse that's starting at KAMC 4th aug I was just woundering if your nurses and if so whats the accomadtion like coz all ive been told is it will be allocated to me when a get there, and how easy is it to get set up with internet.
Cheers Gav
Hi Gavin
Ummmm im not to sure what the male accomodation is like,i live in the building next to the main male accomodation block which is on the hospital grounds. If it's anything to go by, i was lucky enough that i didnt have to share and got a little studio flat which was newly refurbished.
Getting set up on the internet is really easy,if you do it through the social club you just have to take the modem (which should be in your room) and your laptop to the office and they will sort it out for you, the cost just comes out of your wages every month then. I didnt go through the social club, i got it from the phone shop on site and bought it all up front.
Hope this answers your question
ya its really dam boring country we r in dammam and no one is there to socialize
paradigmshift wrote:ya its really dam boring country we r in dammam and no one is there to socialize
You guys on the coast have it MADE! Come to Riyadh and you'll quit complaining lol
Cheers Loulou,
How much did it cost through a shop, and is it unlimited? thinking i'll properly do that as by the sounds of it im gunna need my playstation ha
Gav
Haha, i paid about £320, its unlimited and it's for 12 months and you get 5 months free, overall works out about 20quid a month. I think the social club internet works out about £30-£35. I got mine the 2nd day i was here, because i couldnt wait until the orientation to see how to sort it all out through the social club. Iv had no problems with it so far
Hi Guys,
I see a lot of people have been going through the same roller coaster ride as i have. I have been here for 2 months now and i am still home sick but not as much as the first month. I'm looking forward to my 3 month probation period being over so i can start travelling.
