Hello guys,
First of all, I am new to the forum, I enter here seeking for advice. I have the opportunity to work in Iraq for a big oil company.
The position is to be an international rotator, 30 days in, and 30 days off. My questions are:
How dangerous is to work in a drilling rig?
How dangerous are the roads that take the crews to the rigs?
and finally, how dangerous is to stay in the cities near the oil fields for a night or two.
Thanks in advance.
Carlos

Hope you will soon get some feedbacks.

Hi Carlos
It depends where will you be wokring and living. For example, if you are working and living in the Kurdish region, then it is safe for foreigners and there are many expats living here with their families.
If your contract is outside the Kurdish region, then it depends on the location. Let me know your locations and I can give you more specific advise.

Hi Hasan,
Thanks for the reply. Don't know the exact name of the region, all I know is that is in the north. I would be living in the rig site for 30 days and then I would return to my country for 30 days, for days off.
Regards
If it is Kurdish region it is very safe and the rest I don't think so.

If you tell me which company is hiring you, I would be able to tell you where you will be located. I supply oilfield and know their operation sites.

Hasan
Hey,
Thanks everybody for the orientation, the company is based on Erbil, I've read about it and I've found out that it is pretty safe, what are your impressions? Should be flying there in a couple weeks.
Regards
Ask me guys how dangerous is it ...
I am in south ... In dhi qar area with Petronas ... And we are not allowed to go out to the cities ... Guards accompany you to location and we always travel in a caravan of 3 land cruisers ... With bullet proof jackets on .... Nothing happened so far ...
But its like living in a jail ....

Thank you. I will be going for my first shift next week. I am looking forward to see the city. Any advices about what to buy before the trip, is there anything that I should buy and cannot be bought in Erbil? I am very interested in local traditions and what to do to not disrespect the locals folks.
Regards
Mate you will be in north .. The kurdistan region ... Its quiet safe there .. Winter is around the corner ... And its a real winter ... Everything is available ... Look out for the food ... You have to accept the local food ... And its without spices ... People are nice here ... They will welcome you and will help you if you need anything ... Language will be a problem ... People dont speak english ... And do not try to explore anything on your own .. And dont go anywhere alone ... Heard some kidnapings of expats lately ... Avoid visitng south of iraq or even baghdad ... In short dont come down the map .. Stay in north ...
