Hello,

I will be going to Vietnam soon and was wondering if the tv's especially older CRT Tube types, have the 21 pin skart sockets like the TV's in europe.

I beleive that Vietnam uses the NTSC TV system like the US, so I suspect the TV's do not have these scart sockets.

No, SCARTs area Euro standard and only sets imported with the owners have them.

For those who don't know a SCART it is a connector introduced to entertainment systems, way back in the 70's, that provided access to various parts of a TV to allow for superior pictures.

Wikipedia has a detailed explanation: < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCART >. Another good site is: < http://pinouts.ru/Home/Scart_pinout.shtml >. (Has pin-outs for many connectors)

The sets here are multi-standard and only Russian and N Korean standards won't work,

AC is 240VAC using 2-pin Euro and 2-pin American/Japanese plugs. You can leave those UK monster plugs at home - only Singaporean hotels use them.

Thanks a lot for your quick answer Jaitch

Sygon, what are you looking to connect? While most do not have a scart connector they do have alternative inputs.

sygon

It was to connect older consoles like Super Nintendo.

laidbackfreak

Should be able to connect those via AV cables (The Red, white and yellow ones) Quite a lot of TV's have those.

It may be easier and cheaper to get a Scart to AV convertor.

Not too sure where to find in HCMC though.

not found on any of my 3 LG's. however, older stuff is also available. Plenty of cheap second and stuff on small street shops

Try this site. All kind of scart listed here. I bought online from this many times.

Very reliable and delivery is free anywhere on earth. Even for orders as little as USD10.00.

Just Make sure you don't ask them to deliver to some remote village in Africa, you're ok. They will still deliver but takes forever to reach you!

Delivery is around 2 - 4 weeks. To be safe, use Paypal.

Nowaday, I let my fingers do the shopping.!

And to be safe, I usually buy less than USD50 per order. Once i got an order delivered to a wrong address and they replaced it free of charge!

Hope it helps.

Be aware that you will need to pay duties when having it shipped to Vietnam. Came to around 30% of purchase value last time I did it.
Did not help with all the tricks dealextreme did to help you reduce/avoid paying duties.

Did help (avoid paying duties) when I ordered from them in other countries though :).
Also, you'll need patience when ordering from them. In Vietnam, it takes 2 months!!! In other countries, one month is not unusual.

Indeed !

Great information regarding shopping online from VN.

I guess for around 10 bucks to get a Scart to AVI converter with free delivery, it's buyer descretion to give it a shot.

With the exception of the SCART connector many electronic components are available in TP HCM for ridiculously low prices.

Example a 555 timer chi[ for around 6 cents US, etc.

If you want schematics for these adapters you are talking of look at:

< http://www.geocities.ws/podernixie/htpc/cables-en.html >< http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/vga2tv/circuit.html

One thin that is hard to find is Vero Board, or similar, or even perf board although having PCBs made is extremely cheap.

Thanks to all that have replied, I'll get a scart to av converter, quality not quite as good as scart, but good enough.  Shame scart to Component is so expensive.
Any way hopefully life in HCMC will be more out doors than cold England, so I'll be doing more interesting things.
