Hotmail will be replaced by outlook.com

It is available as beta version. You can have a new ID also.

I did upgrade my account this morning. It all worked well.

I have updated my account and its working well. Got a new email id also. Old id will also be working. If you switch earlier you will have option of new desirable id at this stage.

Well gotta say that loved the interface, Microsoft has finally done something right after a million years. Immediately signed in for a new email id just for the sake of blocking it under my name (don't know if our kids will ever be able to find a simple username or email address available).

Chances are bleak as they have allowed multiple aliases. Like if you have been abc@hotmail.com, you're able to register not only abc@outlook.com but also pqr@outlook.com AND xyz@outlook.com (5 aliases maxiumum per account).
