We are currently developing a GPS base map for the Tom Tom Go 500/700/900 series for Tripoli - this will probably be based upon the Google Maps format and will include among others, landmarks and waypoints for places of interest and lots of other useful features. If this proves to be successful, we will extend the coverage area to include the coastal belt and maybe even some of the interior region and oilfields.
If there is sufficient demand, we will also consider developing base maps for other GPS devices.
Unable to give any costs just yet, at least until the Beta version is complete. Please note that this map WILL NOT be avaliable anywhere else.

Anything that will help me navigate my way around the country will be of help mate, count me in as interested. Oh aye, flying out on the 15th of December, will give you a shout nearer the time.

Aye tell me about it, what does roast camel with all the trimmings taste like anyway washed down with fruit juice of course
Good idea.
Maybe, just maybe you can base it on the new postal codes, if it ever surfaces.
But, well done mate, that is DEFINITELY something that should be available in the Libya
so how do actually determine addresses like "opposite the malik supermarket, along aswat road" for instance? what happens if malik supermarket goes bankcrupt one day and aswat road is 5 kilometers long? I never got to figure that out..

Changes occur all the time, which is why updates are required!

I told you its free,,, "free" is a friend's offer, and friends worth far more than 10000000 LYD.
The issue we have at the moment is a lack of quality base maps to work with.
We can make a Vector map - this will run on your GPS device, it will show you where you are (in relation say, to driving down Gargaresh Road), but won't take you from point A to point B.
What we need is a quality base map in order to make a Raster version. This is the type of map which you're all used to seeing on the GPS and which allows you to input waypoints, POI's and is directional capable.
Keep watching this space, we'll get there (pun)
Any update on the production of this map? I'm looking for a GPS map for Libya but as yet, one doesn't seem to exist. Would definately be interested in buying yours if you make it.
I recently saw a GPS device in one of the shops in Fateh tower ground floor of unknown brand that had a full Libya map. Asking price was around LD 250, I am not 100% sure.
I was looking was something that would be usable in North America as well but it did not have any other maps installed. The merchant mentioned that I could download the maps from internet but decided not to chance it so I didn't buy.
Maybe worth a try if you are interested, than you can post your evaluation of the device here so others can make up their minds.
thankyou for the reply. I think i've seen the device you are on about. I'm looking for just the maps though. I have a built in GPS in my car but there are no maps for libya on it. I can add tomtom maps to it so i'm hoping this will solve my problem

Well, if you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them..

HI,
I bought a Garmin Nuvi 1440 and downloaded an IMG file which has all the main roads in Libya and details for all the roads in Tripoli. The names of some streets are indicated and there are several points of interest. This is what I did: (1) I downloaded the map file from: garmin.na1400.info/routable.php, and named it "gmapsupp.img". (2) I then inserted a microSD card in the slot of the Garmin Nuvi 1440, connected the Garmin to my PC and then using file manager I created a directory called "Garmin" in the microSD card. (3) I then downloaded a software called "IMG2GPS" (freely available - use a bittorrent if you have any problems) and uploaded the file to the Garmin directory on the SDcard using the "Folder/Card" option. (Remember that the Garmin website provides free software updates and the USB drivers in case you need them.) Perhaps the IMG file can be used for Tom Tom. Hope this helps someone!!
You know that I'm in. Have lots of tech q's and would love to get together to talk more about it. I should be arriving in BG in a few days from Alexandria. If ya'all need any help let me know... would be glad to fill my time with something like this.
Very interested and shure that I'm not the only one! :-) Good luck! Make a good job! :-)
