:D That's true. Back in 2004, they decided to enforce that taxis would be driven by locals only. The loudest screams were from women. An aweful voice (led by someone from royals) was "We don't trust them. Allow us to drive or take the policy back". The plans were put to cold limbo then.

I can see some huge extra lane being constructed right in between the two roads @ King Abdullah rd, Looks like the lanes are being made for some skybus or something for public transport. Though not sure.

Primarily because of cheap petrol and cars available for all ranges there is no bus service. However, for people who cant afford it with salaries of 1 to 2k SAR per month.. they travel in orange an white buses without aircondition which I blv takes 2 riyals from 1 spot to another but they are worse so you cant try that.

For metro, saudi tourism commision is in bidding process.. as per arab news they are going to have it by 2014. You can search for news article at arab news for the specifics.

There are a few reasons for this:

1st - lack of planning and lack of vision
2nd - Cheap cars, cheap petrol and high disposable income
3rd - Attitudes and mindset of locals (who will walk, wait and organize life according to the schedule of local transport) - its too much to ask for ;)

If you are able to be around in about another 5 years you will be able to make use of those facilities
An alliance has already been set up --presume construction will follow --But like all major projects here do not hold your breath!!!!

cuz saudies have cars and wouldn't use the metro ,, and the ones who really need a metro are not saudies ,, and saudies dont help non saudies they enslave them for the most part

Because the government cannot see further than about 6 months as a long term plan and wouldn't know a cost benefit analysis if it fell on them.

Guys

There is a metro bus service operated by SAPTCO around the city. They have several routes. You may have seen orange colored buses on the road. Not enough but they do help to some extent by offering an economical ride to low income group of Riyadh. I have seen many of these on different roads in Riyadh (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sir_nebur/ … 0275359784)
