The people
Life is never boring due to the unpredictability of basic services
Always meeting new and interesting people
Help around the house
Once you have identified good workmen it is easy to get things done

Sun, beaches!
Friendly smiling people
Helpful people making life easier
Steeped in culture and interesting
more laid back, more personal freedoms, not too frenetic, not too much'big brother'

makes up for the (many)drawbacks and inconveniences ...
