moving to Malta with a 15 years old boy...

Post new topic

hi,

I'm very glad this forum exists. I could answer almost all of my questions reading the topics here. and yet I am still confused about the most important one - how to pick up a school for my 15 years old son.

let me give you some history first.
my husband got a job offer from a company based in Malta he couldn't refuse. as I don't believe in families living apart I will move to Malta too along with our son. our daughter, who is 18 years old, will stay in Sofia as she is last year in high school and moving her at the end seems a really bad idea.

I read whatever I could find about schools in Malta, however that didn't help me much. the education system in Bulgaria is really different than the one used in Malta.
- apparently we should choose a private school because of the language (luckily our son's English level is quite good)
- we should look for a senior school, right?
- do they accept new students in the middle of the year? my husband will arrive in Malta next month, while we will come late in December or early in January
- are there any initial exams to show what is the student's level?
- any idea what kind of documents will be needed? I suppose they might vary depending on the school, however there should be something all of them want
- I read somewhere that the baptismal certificate is also needed. I have it but I don't understand its purpose in this situation. we are orthodox Christians, while as far as I know in Malta most of the people are catholic

I read also about the tuition fees. that puts QSI and Verdala out of the list. in the beginning we shall rely only on my husband's income as I still don't know if I will be able to move my work with me

sorry about the long post but I am really confused and even scared. it all happened too fast. I feel I am totally unprepared. I am trying to catch up with the information gathering, however the result for now is just a big mess in my head...

thanks in advance for any reply I can get. anything you say will be of great help. even things like 'are you crazy? leave the kid with his grandparents. moving him at that age will ruin his life'

Dont worry too much .. there are many bulgarian families living in Malta; and I suggest you write to the Education Department of Malta or seek it on the internet.
There is an existing community of Bulgarians here... so I am sure you will find support , and let me tell you also that we Maltese too are very helpful
So, be strong , everything will be fine!
God bless !

I tried to reply from home but without success. I will continue with my research and will post here again as the information might be useful for somebody else
