Did you move with your spouse/partner?

If you relocated internationally with your spouse or partner, how did it impact your own career?
I am gathering information for a workshop for accompanying spouses/partners at the Families in Global Transition conference and would love to hear your views on this topic.

Ugh, that survey is pretty long, and our experience is from a while back, and it was my wife who moved with me to the US :-)
We figured she would have trouble furthering her career there anyways, so instead we had our first child while there :-)
Nevertheless, she learned English from zero to fluency, saw the world, met lots of different people from far away cultures, so all in all, I think the experience was a great push forward for her as well.

i have been moving from country to country following husband( job), left my home country, now expat for 14 years. learnt languages, different cultures, meeting ppl, making friends, this is best experience. but for career it is disaster if moving constantly. i m  house wife for 12 years with degree of chemical engineer.

Hi Jennifer,

I am not sure if you are still after replyes to this post but thought I share my story anyway in case it is useful.

I met my partner when we were both living in the UK. As we are both foreigners eg I come from Czech and he is German, and we both love travelling, it was always quite clear to both of us that we are likely to move to another country when the right opportunity or urge come along. Althought it was always me who was into looking into living in more exotic locations like Australia, New Zealand, Kanada etc, it so happened that my partner got a job offer he could not refuse. And it was in Germany. Despite him being German, he was not that keen on moving 'back home' just yet but the offer was a good opportunity so we thought we should go for it.

As a worst case scenario, I was prepared to leave my good job in management consulting and get a new job in Germany or even go back to university to do PhD. After almost 5 years with the same company this would have been quite an exciting change for me so I was quite content that it might happen. But as my company is global, first I wanted to see if I can get a transfer to German office instead, which would be less radical. And it so happened that it worked out and after taking 4 months unpaid leave to sort out our living, move and generally settle in, I just started work in Germany for the same company I worked for in the UK. The language is a challenge but I am learning and my company knows that they can only put me on english-speaking assignments for now.

So to cut the story short - I followed my partner abroad and it worked out just fine for both of us. The move only set my career back by half a year or so, meaning that my deserved promotion will not take place this year but middle of the next and I get a great experience of living and working in Germany.

I hope you find this useful and if you do and want to know more, just let me know.
