anyway ,
this is what one Romanian person with no passport must do in cambodia .. go to the German embassy -> they will give you an emergency document which serves the only purpose of  going straight to Romania for a new passport .
That's it . no other candies attached to it .
it has a 30 days validity.

TheDigitalMage

you have to GO there?

gawd, how stupid!

Aaliyah01

yes

phnom-penh-services

A female friend of mine from Europe had $20 snatched from her hand while she was walking along earlier today, people need to be alert at all times, especially women.

TheDigitalMage

What really is important is that you are OK and sound.
It could've been worse for you as a woman. I assume you applied for a new passport and don't walk around town with a lot of money AND your passport. Make a certified copy of it and take it if you need it. Lastly don't stand out too much and displaying valuable items That makes you a target.

Aaliyah01

yeah.. i've been told i'm targeted N easy to spot in the crowd cz i look very different dressed the way i dress .. though seriously i doubt that can actually be a valid reason but eh.. u never know...
N no, not yet applied for a new passport cz its very difficult , theres no romanian embassy here , N should go to Hanoi but neither my embassy not other EU embassy knows if i will be allowed to cross the border or not .. no passport for that u see ..N i've been told to call the vietnamese airport border N ask them.. well that's crappy, what can i say ...

TheDigitalMage

It's very unlikely that they will let you cross the border without a passport or a copy of it. My embassy provides an emergency document which allows me to leave a country without a passport maybe you can call or email a romanian embassy if they also provide it.

Aaliyah01

..they provide but its only  for direct fly to Romania .. not other countries

oldsarge

I am sorry about your misfortune.   Is there anything I can do to help.

Stafford

Aaliyah01

thank you oldsarge. i think i'm ok .
the intention does a whole lot :)

Hi Aliya,

Read this post so late. Hope you now recover from this and doing okey now, don't you?

You are women and living in foreign country alone, stuck into that situation but still aware us of it. it is incredible spirit. If i were you, i would have been so desprate, even was getting panic when i was snatched in my own country.

Whatever people say here, it 's just words. i believe you stand strong on your own feet.

All the best

JanKrohn

Just be aware with the upcoming elections. Police will be busy keeping order for demonstrations and other events, and have only little capacity to patrol other areas. So the number of mugging incidents is likely to increase.

Aaliyah01

oh..that's good to know.. when is it ?

JanKrohn

Next month. Around 15th or 20th I believe. But there are already regular demonstrations going on.

Everyday in Cambodia, I use a biker wallet that has a chain from the wallet to my belt. When carrying bigger money and my passport I have a fanny pack with a leather pouch inside. The pouch is attached to a length of 700lb test plastic coated steel braid cable with a nicropressed loop on both ends,(made it at a sailboat shop), a swivel on one end with a clip for the pouch and the other loop goes around my belt. I invented this 30 year ago when traveling in Thailand and its worked great. At the train station in Bangkok I had pickpockets circling me trying to figure out what it was. Someone razor cuts the pouch or the fanny pack, they get about half a meter away and you have them. (I also always carry a flick knife and have used it in my 31 years in SEA.) [Moderated: Useless comment]
For staying in hotels without in-room safes, I have a portable pistol safe. (any sport shop in America/on line have them). They come with steel cable, you attach the cable to a big piece of furniture and you have a safe. I also attach a portable alarm that can be bought on line. The alarms are used for cars and attach to the steering wheel, but make great portable alarms. They are very loud at about 120db.

My organization issued some notes. Let me summarize the most important points. Hope this will be helpful. The election will take place on 28 July.

* Avoid any political events like demonstrations.
* Avoid travel in lonely places or after dark.
* Be sensitive when discussing or expressing political views.
* Keep three days of water and food supply.
* Keep up to date via newspaper and/or TV.
* Always securely lock your rooms and houses.
* Have evacuation plans in mind both for air travel and land travel.

I'll add one more from my personal list:

* Register with your embassy.

Best wishes,
Jan

Aaliyah01

thank you for the good intentions

@wdwflash I love your ideas! Takes a bit of effort to implement but perfect for the paranoid.

As for Aaliyah01, good luck to you in recovering your passport and making it out of this mess. Yet, I do understand your viewpoint and share it to some extend, but after all my time traveling the world must say that standing out will always be a "reason" or rather and incentive for petty thieves. I've been to countries where I heard stories about foreigners being too careful, meaning they had only the equivalent of $20 on them and a junk-phone you can get for less than $5 in most places... Then got stabbed for that by an angry kid who thought they'd have something of more value than just that.

From whichever side you look at it, this sort of thing happens all the time and is only semi-predictable at best. Unfortunately we all have to move on after something like this and I bet you will be able to. God speed! :)

Aaliyah01

thnx i already got over it :)) its an old thread .. last year october

dosolto

Aaliyah01....
how did you manage to get your new passport without leaving Cambodia?

kth5

Interesting... the dates on the last posts showed June this year.. Oh my, maybe I'm becoming senile? :D

Glad it all work out for you somehow!

JanKrohn

Getting a new passport without leaving Cambodia is easy. Leaving Cambodia without a passport is more challenging I guess :-)

Aaliyah01

yes.very.lol but can be done :)

Aaliyah01

So sorry to hear that, next time get the safety bag for passport and purses hiding inside of your body, that's what I do everything is hiding inside of me.

loveleeone

Hey Ali, goodluck with your problems, it did happened to me in sihanoukville, l was riding and friend from Belgium had a small bag they just snetch and gone,  but this was only once in two year period in lovely Cambodia, evrywhere in the world you have same problems. So the word is, keep your belongings in a sage place, good luck

wdwflash

I devised a system years ago that has worked for me. I have a leather fanny pack (unfashionable) Inside it is a pouch. The pouch hold my valuables. I went to a place that has boat equipment and rigs sailboats. I got a length of plastic coated wire (used in sailboat rigging and other things, about 500lb test). I had a large loop made in one end and a nicropress fitting pressed on, then the other end I put a snapclip on with a small loop and another nicropress fitting. You attach one end to your belt or yourself and the other end to the pouch in you fanny pack/pack. Thievs are only going to get a couple feet and you now have him or if they try to razercut your pack your valuables are still connected to you. I've stood in the worst pickpocket place in Thailand (Bangkok train station) and had pickpockets circle me trying to figure out what the white wire was.
