Hi,

Im thinking of going to Mauritius in March for 3 months maybe longer and am looking for some guidance on where to stay and accommodation costs with good internet access.  I am going to be writing a book so I am looking for peace and quiet but would like to be sociable also.  What kind of costs should I plan for and how will I get around the island.  I will be on a tight budget as I am quitting my job to live me dream life.  Just hope it all works out.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi Ed

I would have loved to have the same guts and talent as you do and live my passion against all odds.

There are so many places which satisfy your quest for quietness and surely ... inspiration.

It depends on how “close” you would like to have your neighbours – few metres or not less than 100 metres.

Prices of comfortable accommodation range from as low as US$ 400/- to US$ 800/-. Each having its plus and minus points.

The best way would be for you to visit the island and choose by yourself after roaming around for one week.

A comfortable and simple living, excluding your whisky, wines, and caviar, would necessitate an average figure of some US 400/- per month.

Still, these figures are merely indicative ones, and will depend highly on your mode of living.

Cheers

Hi Vayid,

Thank you so much for encouragement and advice,  I can life quiet simply, so if I budget around $1000 to $1200 a month I could make that work.  If I was to stay for a week is there cheap places to stay until I found somwhere to rent, and where should I use as a base.  Also, would I need to hire a scooter or car to get around and is this expensive?

I dont mind taking public transport and really want to experience local life and not tourist life.  Being near the beach will be important as I love the beach and walk every morning.

I am getting all excited about the prospect of starting again.

Thanks again Vayid for info.

If you need a none touristic area theirs many places.. flic en flac, blue bay, belle mare etc try to Google some places to have a view of some places you like..

A monthly budget of US$ 1,200/- is highly reasonable. As for a cheap temporary accommodation pending choosing one for a longer term, I would budget a figure not exceeding US$ 75/- par day.

I do not know the daily rental of a scooter, whilst that of a fairly new small car would be around US$40.

Public transport is the best way to easily mingle with locals. You can roam nearly anywhere in Mauritius from 06:00h to nearly 20:00h in public transport, though at times they may not be much comfortable.

Besides, nearly 75% of bus conductors speak simple English, and it would not be much of a challenge to travel in buses.

These regular trips will surely be source of valuable anecdotes, which could further enrich your writings

Hi there. I am also moving to Mauritius end of Jan next year for 2 years. Car rentals can be exspensive but apparently you can rent a scooter if you up for it. Grand baie is very busy but you can find some cheap accomodation on a monthly basis about Rs 20000.00 per month all included.nice place to meet peopel and socialize.

Flic and flac tamarin is a more quit area but can be more exspensive at times.

Food is faerly not to exspesive but I find it coming from South Africa that if you coming for 3 months and want to save money bring along enough toiletries as this can become a exspensive item.

If you are a drinker and enjoy a drink now and then buying alchol in the stores is very expesive and can be anything to 4 times more exspensive than in South Africa.

Hope this info helped you and just ask if teher is anything else.

I am from SA but have been in Mauritius a few times for work over the last year.

Hi Ed,

Its nice to know that you have chosen Mauritius to complete your book. An Apartment or Bungalow in Mauritius would generally cost you around Rs. 20, 000 to 30,000 depending on the facilities you would like to have. I do know about as i have some friends who have been staying in Mauritius... For the internet access you will have to see as most of the apartments or bungalows do not provide but there are some who do provide them.
