thinking of relocating to Belize or Indonesia

Th biggest question is: how much money does one need to live in Belize (Ambergris Key) or a country in Indonesia. I heard that an American needs at least 2k a month to live in Belize...is this true? I am single, 64 and semi-retired..meaning I have 1,026 bucks coming in every month from the government...so can I live on this? A little timid about moving by myself at my age...but am interested in what other expats have to say. Thanks for your time.

Hello Ellen.

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

Maybe you could post your questions on the forums of the concerned countries, that is, Belize and Indonesia.

Thank you,
Aurélie

The average household income in Indonesia is 37.7 million rupiah (US$ 3,996) per year, and above 65.6 million rupiah (US$6,953) per year counts as "high income" in the official statistics.
So obviously it's possible to live well on your US$12000 per year if you are able to adapt to local standards, even though you, as a foreigner, will be charged more for almost everything.
But I wonder what kind of visa you are intending to have. To my knowledge, Indonesia doesn't have one for people wanting to retire there (on foreign-sourced income). Malaysia has such a scheme, but you need more income there.

Hi there.
I would choose Asia over Belize. I have been to Belize many times, and Ambergris caye is probably the most expensive place in Belize. My favorite area of Belize is up in the cooler area around San Ignacio near the Guatemalan border. Jungle, streams, rivers, and a slower pace of life. Bullet tree falls near there is a nice place to live.
