Access ro accommodation is controlled through mandatory registration with the Cong An. This eliminates the real;y cheapest pads.

There is a dormitory in Pham Ngu Lao where beds go for USD$7/night (over an InterNet cafe).

Foreigners can't even use the chair-sleeping hotel in Quan 4! (Where you actually sleep in a chair, on the sidewalk under an awning!)

http://batdongsan.com.vn/   this is another good site to check out. The site is in Vn so use Google translate on it. I never look at craigslist due to the high prices. I would just come here and find a place. Stay at a cheap hotel temporarily.

yes jaitch I was and still am but it was hanoi ( friendship village ) but I am doing Vietnamese lesson on skype with someone in Saigon and so I am looking around there also .
