Hello everyone!

I'm after as much info as possible on living in Delhi as a woman & with a 15 month old baby boy. My husband has just been offered & today accepted an 18 month placement starting mid to late march. I think we will most likely be living in the New Friends Colony. Obviously I am a little nervous & excited but I also want to be as prepared as much as possible so please help me out!

1. What activities are available for me & my little boy?
2. What would you recommend we air freight etc for him that we'd find difficult to buy?
3. Are there many groups or get together a for ex pat women & children?
4. As a female what should I be aware of? Any clothing I should avoid? Any toiletries I might find hard to come across?
5. What do you wish you'd known before moving? Any hints, tips or plain & simple advice would be massively appreciated.

I look forward to reading your replies & thank you for taking the time to reply in advance.

Hello gembo81,

Hi! Gemma, Welcome to India and Delhi... New Friends colony is a nice area to live.
I don't have very specific replies but hope some delhite wud soon step up to answer . Meanwhile, few things to keep in mind...
1. Delhi with adjoining cities of Gurgaon & Noida has everything you would possibly need in terms of recreation, shopping , movies, clubs and play schools.
2. One important thing is transport, Delhi or NCR [National Capital Region] is pretty spread out, you have radio taxis like Easy cabs & Meru which are very professional and safe and work on metered rent. Though Cheaper & available on immediate basis will be auto rickshaws. They are a bit of haggle for the fare but u shd get hang of it in sometime.
3. April to June will be typically summer time getting hotter by the month.
4. http://www.justdial.com/Delhi-NCR
Above is link to a good directory service provider. Call them to find anything u need at a place closest to you, free of cost.
5. Depending of ur country check with ur embassy, they might have events planned for nationals to come together...
6. Another great thing is u wud be abt 4-5 hrs from Jaipur city, which will be a great weekend getaway and is a preferred International tourist destination...

Do ask more questions if any..

I am an Indian now living in the US; but travel to India every year to see my folks in Chennai. For Brits you will have little or no problems. Since you would be relocating to New Delhi most of the things that you get in London for day to day living would be available. Just like the piccadilly circus, you will see the Connought circus and all the items are available with a few exceptions. I would ask you to be circumspect when it comes to safety.  New Delhi is notorious and known for it from the time immemorial.  Do not allow your young kids without a proper supervision.

If you have any specific question, please shoot.  Ram

Hi Gemma,
Delhi is a pretty welcoming city, an abode of culture, values, love nd togtherness. Everything is easily available in and around New Friends Colony. Markets, hotels, hospitals, clubs etc. For recreation you can join New Friends Colony Club.

Gemma,

let me flip the coin. I am european, travelled the world and have been in Gurgaon (next to Delhi) for 1.5 years now.
One think is to come to India as a tourist and enjoy all it has to offer for a LIMITED amount of time, one thing is to live here as a local/native. An other thing is to move hear for long time, coming for a "1-st world country". It's gonna be hard and shocking at time.
Let's not hide it.
I am talking from a EU/Western point of view: living here is completely different from what we are used to. It is hard and very different. Few things just pop in my mind that you should consider:

- overal and everywhere the hygienic conditions are MUCH worse then what you/we are used to (except some top level hotels)
- roads are overall very dirty, air is very polluted, evertyhing is in general dirty
- most taxi are dirty and smelling (drivers used to sleep in the car) so you need to pay more and get better service than average
- traffic is cahotic beyond imagination
- you need to drink bottled water/drinks and avoid ice cubes
- careful with fresh veg/fruit if you don't know how it is washed
- people in the streets can be very pushy
- people are everywhere at any time, this place is over loaded with people
- poverty is everywhere and especially on the roads, it's hard to get used to it
- all the locals are crazy about these shopping malls but after some time they are all very similar and it gets boring. walking on the streets will become a challenge especially when the heat will rise (very soon) hence you will start to feel trapped when forced to be only indoor (apartments, hotels or shopping malls)

Hope it helps.
