Expats advice on recreation in Riyadh.

NumbScully

Hello everyone.

I recently moved back to Saudi after a 6 year stint abroad and it's been 4 months since I came back and I am utterly bored and surprised at the changes. When I was younger and lived here, I never had this issue mainly because I was always preoccupied with video games or hanging out with friends and playing video games with them, so the distraction was always there.

Now, I notice that we have this preposterous curfew where you can't find anything after 2 AM. It's become like a ghost town. It's obvious that they don't want anyone to leave the house so what is a person permitted to do for fun here? I personally turned into a hermit and read books, play music, rarely ever leave the house except for the occasional cup of coffee with friends and colleagues.

Most of my friends are living abroad and the ones that aren't have 9 - 5 jobs and getting together with them always ends up in the same conversation, over and over again. Economy's this and thats, some mishaps that happened at work, basically, it's like Groundhog's Day, where you live the same day over and over again.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy discussing the economy, social status of the city, what's wrong, what can be done to correct that, why certain things are a taboo to talk about, consider, or even attempt to fix, things that are far beyond my comprehension.

But lately I'm more of a doer than a talker. So I enjoy doing social things, events, fundraisers, those recent endeavors by Redbull to sponsor local musicians and cater to the shows they are doing in compounds was a brilliant idea before abruptly being disbanded by the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice squad.

For some reason, as of late I can't seem to find anything to contribute to, or to partake in. Perhaps I'm getting lazy or maybe because I'm a local, certain events don't reach my ear anymore.

I'd like to know what the Expats think. See Riyadh through an Expats eyes. I'm pretty sure that most of you know the city better than I do at this point.

I apologize if this seemed like one extremely long rant but I strongly feel that this is an issue that should be addressed. Recreation for Saudi Youth rather than force them to stay home and rot away on the couch in front of a T.V.

I understand your plight, Scully, but speaking for myself, I TOO am staying home and rotting away on the couch in front of T.V. (and WORSE, the American programs are all ones from LAST freakin' year so I'm rotting away in front of RE-runs lol)

NumbScully

Yeah, it's a real shame Allie.

I know this is completely off topic but if you have a fast and stable internet connection you can always watch American cable programming for free and in real time on certain websites such as Jumptv.com, it would be up to date programs and news. I know I like to get my fare share of the tonight and late shows of Conan O'Brian and Craig Ferguson.

Enjoy your weekend :)

Fidgety Soul

Housewife like me,may not be practically capable to do a lot regarding this "disastrous change"in Riyadh. However I still hate this 2 AM shut off thingy.I remember 1 year earlier it wasn't too bad but i got to know Saudi Govt wanted to change the late eating out habits of us[exclusively Saudis].I have noticed to arrange gatherings people are quite dependent on Weekends [unlike me]:P

I heard the scenario is different in Jeddah and life is more casual and better comparatively Riyadh.

And since i m a couch potato i don't mind ogling my Tv whole day and night and if these r the shows like F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and Desperate House wives,i don't mind the re-re and re telecasts :P

Alliecat

You'll probably laugh but my compound has a 1AM curfew (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) for single women on weekends so the 2AM cutoff means nothing to me lol

musicman

well the best option to circumvent the curfew is to stay outisde during the weekends and come back home in the morning after

Alliecat

is that an invitation, musicman?

sweetchoice

MisterStretch

Yes, Allie, there are camel races here.

The OP brings up an interesting subject, if only from his perspective.

Yes, a few things have changed in Saudi since you were gone, but the biggest change is just that you have started to become older.  Video games kept you from being bored when you were younger here, your friends have gotten jobs and you all have moved into the next stage of life.

It isn't so much that Saudi has changed...you have.

KSA isn't the only government that is trying to curtail night time activities and you might be surprised at the reason.  It has very little to do with vice...and almost all to do with work productivity.

A workforce that stays up all night, talking, drinking coffee with friends and socializing is able to produce at much reduced efficiency during the work day.

KSA's workforce is getting the crap kicked out of it, in terms of competitiveness with other nations, hence a curfew to force folks back to bed.

Malaysia instituted a "close curfew" so business establishments (except small eateries) were closed early for the same reason.

And how many times have you been caught "out", Ms Cat?

Silly things, curfews; limiting rules from limited intelligence.

Fidgety Soul

MisterStretch i appreciate the way u have described it because thats the actual motive behind such steps.

Alliecat

The one time I was out late (NYE), I'd gotten a 'late pass' till 2AM.  Problem with that, though, is that you are now officially on record as having left the compound  so should something happen and you don't make it back, they know!

As mentioned earlier, the insane thing about the curfew is that.. rather than being a bit late, you're forced to stay out ALL night!  Kinda defeats the original purpose of the curfew?

musicman

curfews are meant to be broken ...

Im looking for guitars and lessons....any chance Riyadh has either?

musicman

The AL DAWLOIAH musical instrument stores in Riyadh should be able to give you the contact numbers of music teachers for any instrument. They are the ones who send me students for drum lessons since they know I teach drumming.

NumbScully

Thanks for hijacking my post guys lol

The curfew IS ridiculous, it's affecting a lot of business and I've seen many places close their doors because of it. They aren't racking in as much profit because they have to close their doors early. A lot of  establishments here flourished because of their 'lively' after-hours atmosphere. I especially feel bad for Meed, as soon as they had their new sign with the 24/7, Boom. The curfew goes into effect.

CP, you can buy mediocre to decent quality electric guitars in DOWLIYAH. They have acceptable to good quality Acoustics, and some grade A Bass guitars. All Yamaha as you can expect other than a few rare pickings you can find in the SHO'LAH and GHURNATA branch. Samicks and Mexican Fenders, a couple of Jacksons and one pretty bad Arch-top Jazz guitar.

As for lessons, I know a couple of excellent players who might be interested in giving lessons, and I used to give lessons myself back in the day. So let me know if you are interested.

playing and flirting?... hmm... but from what i've been observing over the last few days is more aggressive than flirting. I had a woman hit my trolley head on in a supermarket. I was so nervous by the ninja mask I kept my head down and slid away... if thats flirting I wonder what playing is like?!
