When expat life really sucks.....

Post new topic

oreneta

OK folks, when it really really sucks, when you have no idea why your doing this...but your still there for a while, what do you do?  How do you pick yourself up and start making it better?

Jo Ann

Pick the one thing you love best and do it!
Well... not going back home though :/

Pierkiroul

I eat confit de canard and Foie gras, drink good wine !
If you're a girl I guess shopping is a solution...

Jo Ann

Pier, I am a girl and I *hate* shopping...

Pierkiroul

Well perfect, then watch soccer with beers and pizza...
Am I categorizing people ? ;-)

Btw Jo ann, I'm from Montpellier ! Hope you're having a good time there... (Not in Le polygone I guess... ;-)

Jo Ann

I only watch soccer when it's World Cup time, don't drink alcohol and yes, I crave for pizza! ;) Je sais, esprit de contradiction ;)

Et je suis Montpelliéraine de coeur, bien sûr I am having a good time around here, away from the Polygone! :P

I travel outside the country or at the very least go to the beach and just relax for the day, which I can easily do here in Nicaragua as there are nice 'tranquilo' beaches an hour or so from Managua.

A long weekend here and there of traveling have always done the trick.

Foi Gras??? Yuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Thailand, when the homesickness and loneliness kicks in, it's easy to get over, just by taking a walk in a crowded place, seeing a movie, pigging out on American fast food...555
Haven't gotten homesick for years now though, and don't suspect I'll be any time soon, though missing family is different though as that happens often.

Sorry to jump in on this topic. I can't really go back. Now that sucks.
Speaking of which- can anyone direct me to information about extradition from the USA to Ireland. If I committed a non-violent crime- what are the odds that they would pursue me in Ireland? Thanks.
Still losing sleep...

Depends on how much it cost your victim, Bobby.

Anyway, the best way to get over the bad times is finding someplace to vent, in my opinion, this forum works for me.

I know the last post in this topic was forever ago but i'm surprised no one mentioned the thing that always helps me..calling my friends or family! I know it can be hard some times when overseas but people living abroad should definitely utilize Skype or some form of free internet calling app. I really lve to webcam with my family when I'm feeling lost and so so far away from all that's familiar.

I go out for a long walk with my camera in nature, take a nap afterward and usually I feel better.

I remind myself that non expat life also sucks at times but at least it's a lot less boring here

I go and do one of the activities I could only do here (go to one of the great outdoor pools, go hiking somewhere, visit with some of the friendly horses)

I call one of the friends I've made here which reminds me that my community is so much more rich where I live than it was where I used to live

or I just complain to my boyfriend who's also an expat (from a different country than I am) and we commiserate  :)

I remind myself that "this too shall pass", and let myself feel whatever it is that Im feeling (sadness, guilt, sorrow, loneliness). The trick is to not wallow! Also, finding new activities helps, things you didnt do at home (that way you cant compare it to how it was there lol).

sometimes life is cruel.. hard to be far from my country but i have to do it to be with my loving husband... internet would help to ease the sadness... i will be in Nicaragua soon.. Hopefully i get to adjust fast...scary and fun....

There hasn't actually been a day when I thought that it sucked so much that I would go back. I love the UK. When I was feeling somewhat frustrated because of different things, I took a number of trips. I went to Liverpool on one day and to Edinburgh for a few days earlier this week. I guess my problem is not so much that I'm finding life difficult sometimes. It might be more to do with the fact that I want to move to a bigger city. I live in a city of over 100,000. But sometimes, it feels so small.

I have spent more time living and working on different continents the past 6 years than I have in my own home.  I think that the more you attempt to adopt the local culture as a part of your own, the less you miss home and long for familiarity, and the more you crave the un-known and appreciate the new.

Interesting question. I get bored easily in anything I do. And While staying in Thailand, I really find no time to enjoy its beauty completely since there are lot of places to visit. Everytime in Thailand, I don't use the word Bored at all as am not bored in this place :).

Any time some that I get annoyed or angry at life in Central America I use humor.

The running joke around Belize is when something goes wrong around here I yell "Paradise!", and laugh at myself and the insane situation that I am in.

I can live where ever I want and I know that.!

You will not make it long term as an expat unless you have humor.

Then I go outside and walk around and remind myself of all the things I am thankful for.

Vacationing in the States is great because it reminds me of all the reasons that I left the USA.

You are not getting out of life alive anyway.

Laugh and count your blessings.
