How much will it cost to rent a 5t van for personal relocation?
Any ideas, prices?

Where are you going? Within Hungary or international?

I hired a van last year to move the contents of a house. I hired from 3 different suppliers and had 2 reasonable (1 was expensive but had a very nice van, 1 scruffy van but worked OK) and 1 very poor experience with not a very nice person.

International, 800 km to the destination

Only in the EU or across non-EU borders? I moved the house contents 250km internationally but only within the EU Schengen area but even I had to be careful. I made about 6 trips using a 3.5t van.

Reason I ask is because of the insurance for the van, the breakdown cover, emergency kit (like triangle, yellow warning vests, spare light bulbs etc) and also at this time of year, the winter tyres (compulsory in some countries).

With the last rental I had major difficulties with a breakdown which resulted in the owner having to come out at the weekend to repair the van. In the end he refused to give back the deposit (bad experience rental no. 3) as "punishment" for breaking down. It turned into a confrontation when I was returning the van. We even had to call the police who actually never turned up. Cost me money and I learnt something about van rentals out of expressz.hu and other web sites. Caution is the name of the game.

I also used Hertz van rental (good experience no 1) and they had the best and newest van but they also cost quite a lot of money. The good experience with van rental no 2 but the van was in a very rough state. But the guy was OK. The last time I went to him, one of his vans (he had 3) was off the road with a destroyed engine.  So it limited me to his "spare" van which was in very poor condition but I was not going that far.

Thanks for the warning. It's in EU and it will be Easter when I plan to use the van.
Do you have HVG? I guess not since you hire a driver.
Roughly, could you give me some numbers(cost)? How much per km?

I drove it all myself. I took a variety of people - relatives and friends to help me load and unload.  It was very hard work in the snow.

I think you mean HGV (Heavy Good Vehicle).

I passed my driving test a long time ago and at that time, you could drive 7.5t on a car license and this has carried over to now. This means I can drive trucks with trailers up to a total weight of 7.5t. For those who passed their tests recently, I think it's only up to 3.5t.

In Austria the snow season (for winter tyres) ends April 15 which is after Easter. 3.5t fully laden (loaded) weight is also the limit for using the motorway sticker. After that, it's per km charges using the nazi vehicle spy vehicle tracker called a "GoBox".
