where do you start?

Post new topic

I'm not an expat myself yet but it's always been somewhere deep in me and recently woke up again so I'm finally planning to move. I have a few different locations on my mind, but that's not my question.

When you get to the decision that you want to move to another country, where do you start? what do you look for first? What do you concentrate on? I'm not asking any specific questions as I don't want to limit the discussion.

There are many experienced expats here so I'm hoping to hear your stories/suggestions/ideas/whatever it is that you'd like to share. I'll appreciate!

Do everything I didn't.

Is the place politically stable?
Is it safe? (Crime rates/drug abuse etc)
How will I earn a living? (Type of work, visa, work permit)
Do I want to live there (Local cultural traits)
Do they want me to live there? (Some countries hardly encourage foreigners)

To be contiunue:

...read about the country where you want to live, visit the country for a long period and not on the tourist mode, try to speak people from that country, learn the language if it is not your mothertongue, why you want to move there, what do you have to offer for that country...

Thank you so much mas fred and Primadonna. These are good questions. I've got some answers already but will definitely think about them!

Paperwork.  Everything starts and ends with paperwork.

And what after the decision? If you decide to move. What do you look for first. a place to stay? job? something else? This may depend on your budget I guess but on the other hand - it may be difficult to find a job not being there yet.

HaileyinHongKong

I got the job before I moved.  The place to stay came later.  I don't know how you could find an apartment if you're not even in the country.  You wouldn't know anything about the neighborhood or what to compare it with.

You plan everything until the cows come home, but you're never really going to know what it's like until you're there.

I just wrote a few tips on my blog about this: www.allthecontinentsinonelifetime.blogspot.co.uk

I've been a serial expat since 2005. So far I did Dubai, Paris and now London.

Hope it helps.

Good luck! I agree get all your paper work filed and understand your tax situation before you move! I would look for a job, then see what places are safe for you to live and etc..
