I work in the renewable energy industry and therefore should be against the coal plant, however, there are some things you should consider before voting 'no' (if of course you still can). Although Mauritius is a signatory on the Kyoto Protocol, it has no obligation to reduce its CO2 emissions because the amount of CO2 we produce here is a drop in the ocean of GHG's produced by other countries.  The new CT plant has a capacity of about 100MW. A single turbine in a large coal plant in the UK can have a 500MW capacity and there will often be 4 of these monsters! Yes there will still be CO2 produced and yes coal is the worst of the 3 main hydrocarbons but what is the alternative?

Solar - Great! But still relatively expensive (more so due the fact that we are on an island).
Wind - Bad for base load due to intermittency of wind and necessitates expensive changes to the MAU grid to increase capacity.
Biofuel - already near full production capacity and if its air quality you're arguing about then this is not a solution.
Wave Power - Still a very infantile technology and thus expensive but studies are being implemented.
Hydro - reached full capacity.
Etc etc etc.....

The bottom line is renewable energy implementation will be a fairly slow process but I assure you it is in the process. I think we should all be grateful for the determination of Mauritius to reduce dependency on FFs and the targets they/we have set. We are already 20% dependent on RE compared to the UK's pitiful 10% and reaching our target is going to be infinitely easier than the UK.

In the meantime, if you still wish to live in the manner to which you are accustomed, and by that I mean have electricity at a reasonable price, then I'm afraid we need to build, and accept the building of, said power plant.

Please turn your attention towards the millions of tonnes of pesticides/insecticides used in the sugar cane industry because this is far more and immediately detrimental to the health of this beautiful island.

And there's nuclear! No? oh ok....

Haha Yeah sorry I forgot hugely expensive, technically specialised, potentially island evaporating nuclear power.

i'm wondering of the base idea:

Basic problem is matching the future needs in electricity consumption.

Actually, if we:
1. invest in actual power plants(new, modern equipments) minimise losses in long terms.
2. invest in the structure of electricity supplies- I see old poles jerking out. i imagine the wiring doing power loss? or some sort of  idea that could minimise the uses.
3. I think if we get rid of 10-20 years old equipments- the electricity consumption reduces?

would 1-3 help?

*My opinion. There are other ways of thinking that might bring peace to the electricity forecast model?

As Ben says cost makes alternatives almost impossible here. Even in fully developed countries in Europe that have huge economies, the cost of energy is a massive problem that they are struggling to stay on top of.

Unfortunately most people here cant afford to pay the bills associated with a cleaner way of generating power. So much so, that many of them already resort to 'stealing' electricity.
