What to do in Hong Kong between flights

Samantham

Hi.  Great site.  We are arriving in Hong Kong at 6pm on Sunday night 21/4/13 with a forward flight at 12:45, ie about 6 1/2 hours to kill.  We'd like to go into HK for dinner.  Is Kowloon a better choice than HK Island because of the proximity to airport.  Any suggestions for an authentic Chinese restaurant or cafe ( casual is preference) that is easy to get to and has great food.  We'd need to be back at airport about 10.30pm.  Thanks in anticipation, any suggestions gratefully accepted!  Kind regards, Samantham

Hong Kong is actually a good city for layovers.  It doesn't really matter if you go to the island or Kowloon since the Airport Express goes to both quickly and easily - take either the Kowloon or Hong Kong stop.  The Kowloon station looks closer on a map, but it only takes a few extra minutes to get to the Hong Kong station.  If you go back to the airport on the same day, you only have to pay for one way.

Both sides have more than enough food & shopping for any visit.  The most authentic Chinese restaurants are the tiny holes in the wall with plastic chairs and lots of customers.  The fancy places with lots of foreigners are the least authentic.

In such a short visit, I would be sure to go to Victoria Harbour and look at Hong Kong from the Kowloon side or Kowloon from the Hong Kong side – or take the Star Ferry or MTR and do both.  The Symphony of Lights is at 8pm – it's possible to get there on time if your flight arrives at 6.
