Hello all,

I am visiting Roatan in April, with the idea of evaluating whether I would want to split my time between New York City (my current home) and Roatan.  I have done the touristy trip to Roatan before, from a cruiseship, and will definitely get some time on the beach this trip as well, but what do you suggest in order to get a better sense of what living on Roatan may actually be like?  It is a very different viewpoint.  I have an appointment with a real estate agent, but do not just want to hear the usual spiel about tropical paradise and never having a care again in the world, etc.

Many thanks for your feedback and advice.

How long are you coming down for?  Before deciding to invest, I'd suggest coming down and renting somewhere for at least 6 months, and getting a feel for what area of the island you like, and whether you enjoy spending a longer period down here.
I've been here for almost 15 years and love it.  If you have any questions, you're welcome to send me a pm.

This is a short trip - just 10 days.  I am in the process now of doing work on my business that will allow me to spend more time away for longer.  Thank you for the offer - I may send some questions soon.  Having been there for 15 years, it must be home by now.  :)

Have you given any thought to the other Bay Islands?  We, my wife and I, retired to Utila five years ago and love it.  Utila is like no other place we have ever visited.  Personally, we don't care for Roatan.  Although many others do.  Not that it isn't beautiful but a little too developed and jaded for us.  Jaded in the sense that the many cruise ships make Roatan appear more like St. Thomas than the idyllic Caribbean island it is advertised to be.
