Need help to begin my Expat

Post new topic

Johnny B

Hey

I'm looking into Expat (live in USA) and I want to move to India or DR (Dominican Republic). I'm hope to leave within 2 years after saving up money.

The bad thing is that i don't know the process of becoming an expat in the US.

So if you could lend any advice that would be awesome, so i can start looking into and beginning this process.

Well, Johny, the USA does not (at least as yet) limit the freedom of movement of its citizens or residents so becoming an expat (expatriate= a person who leaves his/her country in order to live somewhere else) is as easy as getting a passport, purchasing a ticket to somewhere and going there. First here smaller or bigger obstacles arise, because - although most countries will let you stay on their territuries as a tourist for 3 months - some for longer, some for shorter periods - all of them require a permit to become a resident. The qualifications for such a permit differ between countries and differ for various categories of applicants. The easiest - as a rule - is if you are a retiree with a pension you'd be living on as an expatriate, or an investor, who would put a large amount of money into the host country economy and create jobs. The most difficult will be if you need to work there as an expat, because then you'll need a work visa (or become an illegal alien working without permit - if you ever find such a job) and for that you usually need some special qualifications, a sponsoring company etc. etc.  I'd say choose a potential country ( or two, three of them) and read about what is to live there as an expat and what requirements this country have for people who want to live there.

If you are going to maintain US health insurance do check thier regulations. Some say you cannot be out of the country for more then six months. Other then that what was said above is correct it is very easy for US citizen to travel where they want (except Cuba and a few others). There are more rules concerning the country where you might want to go. We are in the DR and loving it.
