Hi everyone!

Anyone knows any salsa club for dancing in Hanoi? I am a cuban salsa dancer and I am moving to Hanoi soon!

I love dancing!

Big hug everyone!

Hi there,

In Hanoi now dancing clubs often include both dancesport and social dance (salsa, merengue, bachata...), they open frequently from 8.30pm-10.30pm for dancing and earlier for dance training.
Several clubs in the center I sometimes visit
1. Discovery club: No 1A Tăng Bạt Hổ - 3rd floor (dancesport, salsa, disco) 8.30pm
2. Fashion club: 3rd floor Home market - Hue street (dancesport + salsa) 8.30pm
3. Truong An club: 152 Lê DUẩn, 3rd floor. 5pm-7pm (usually for older people)
4. 65 Quan Su, 8.30pm (ds, salsa)
5. Sfire club - 5 Ngõ Gạch (only salsa) :)
...... and so many other clubs, but I haven't been there so I dont give you a recommendation.

Have fun!

Waaaaow! thank you very much for you useful information!!! :D

Hi there,
there isn't any cuban style dancing in Hanoi as far as I know. I could be wrong. But it's still a nice and vibrant scene from the little time I spent there.

In HCMC there are a few LA style dancers that can dance to cuban style, but they dance on counting rather than to the clave. I love cuban style but so far haven't found any partners yet.

If anyone find cuban salsa class in Hanoi, I'm interested. I learned a few steps and loved it. :)

We can go to dance together!!! I thing in Hanoi there's no people who dances cuban style. We are the only ones hahahaha :P

Anyone sees locals here dance salsa, bachata... in the "local style"? Can you show me what is the difference?

lauryn6061

not sure what you meant with that question, but I'll try my best to answer.

Most of the salsa you see in Vietnam is either in LA style or NY style, which is an American version of salsa which originated from Cuba and the countries surrounding it. The Americanized style is very linear and is sometimes referred to as "competition salsa", where technicality and flashiness is highly respected.

In Cuba, it is a cultural dance that puts much emphasis on rhythm and expression, with a lot of folk stories or religion interweaved in the dancing. It is a very complex dance, but very enjoyable too. It might not look like what you see on TV, but there is a lot of soul and character in the dancing. Folks in Cuba call it Casino (Cuban salsa).

You can google LA salsa and Cuban salsa on Youtube for examples.

There are a lot of other salsa styles too, like Colombian and Puerto Rican salsa.

Hoaibui

Oh now I see, thank you :) That's what I want to know. But when they play the salsa music, you can freely dance in latin style or cuban style, isn't it? Music is the same?

lauryn6061

About bachata.. I'm not too familiar with it, but I think there is Bachata Moderna and Dominican Bachata. Bachata is originally from the Dominican Republic and is also quite intricate, fun and interactive. The "push hip" on the 3rd beat (or what some call as the hip fart LOL) isn't so pronounced as well. Search for Dominican Bachata on Youtube.. it looks really fun.

LA Style dancers usually dance On1, and NY Style on2. For Cuban style, they are quite versatile, so you can dance on1, on2 or even on3.

Sometimes in Cuban music the music also changes halfway through.. from on1, to on3, and then back on1 again.

For this reason people who are used to LA or NY find it hard to dance to cuban style salsa. Generally, the music is almost the same and you can dance to it in whatever style you want.

The easiest way to find the rhythm is to follow the clave (something most LA dancers don't do, I think), and once you know how the rhythm works.. you can dance to any style or any type of music.

Hope other forumers can correct me if I'm wrong!

Btw, I did get to dance Cuban once in HCMC by virtue of a couchsurfer passing through.

Hey Cuban Salsa lovers..

There is a Cuban Salsa Fiesta happening in Surabaya this September, if anyone is interested it's on the 27th-29th Sept. The link is on FB: facebook.com/events/434928793271764/

Not sure if my teaching schedule permits but I'm gonna try to get time off for this... has anyone had experience with salsa events in Indonesia? I hope the workshops will be well worth it.

Hi I just saw yr message today. I am moving to hanoi as we'll in august. I am Italian and lived in Miami a while. I like salsa, I wonder if you opened a class or some kind of get together. How is life in hanoi?

Hi, any contact number of those Dance studios that you just mentioned? I love dancing but since I moved here in Hanoi, I never dance again. I wanna dance again :) Thanks

There are Salsa dances in La Bomba in Hanoi near Nha Tho Lon. Everynight of the week. Is a good place for Salsa and Bachata with the DJ which is very good.

Hey Sejhmet,

Just read your 2013 query. Was wondering if you still live in hanoi ;-)
I am new here and wanted to check with you if you know any salsa classes around.  I am very keen to learn.

I forgot to mention that on Friday and Saturday night they close the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake and there's always at least one or two spontaneous dance groups that start doing salsa and swing and other type dances in the street
